strava

Would it be by any chance possible that Garmin could improve Garmin connect so that the user could choose which kind of activities she wants to sync with strava? For example I use strava for cycling. I don't want all the other stuff to show up there and it's a hazzle to go delete all other sports manually.

  • I don't believe that Garmin will implement such functions since the use case is too weak and most people just wants to sync everything.

There is a trick that you can use to do exactly what you want: Use a middle service that only handles cycling. That way you will filter all other activities.

Exactly how you connect the services can be done in different ways but here is a suggestion that should work as you want.

    Disconnect Garmin and Strava.

    Sign up for https://ridewithgps.com/

Connect Ride with GPS with Garmin Connect to get only your cycling to Ride with GPS.

Sign up for https://tapiriik.com/ (if you pay $2/year you will get automatic syncing otherwise you will have to start the sync manually)

Connect Tapiriik with Strava and Ride with GPS.

Now your activities will be logged in Garmin Connect and synced to Ride with GPS, Tapiriik will then sync Ride with GPS and Strava.

  • I want the same thing. I don't want the hassle of the middle service though.

Me neither. Then I can as well just go and delete the sports I don't want to see

Everyone would like, including myself, but it is more a task for Strava than for Garmin. All Garmin does, is offering the access to the Activity data to 3rd parties through the API, and it is up to the 3rd party to decide whether they want to read all or only selected activities. There are 3rd parties that need the access to all activities (i.e. MyFitnessPal), others may need only biking, only running, or other types (depending on the main target of the 3rd party service). Hence Garmin must offer all, and it is up to the 3rd party to filter it by some pattern, or read it all.

In other words, you'll be likely more sucesssful asking this change at Strava than requesting it from Garmin, who has to keep the API universal. There is no chance Garmin would develop filtering options for all of the countless 3rd party services using their API. It is up to the API client to do so.

  • Another way is to write a service that uses the Strava API to remove all other activities than cycling from Strava as they are uploaded. That shouldn't be too hard even for a beginner programmer.

I'm not a programmer.  I was thinking it would be a simple tick the box type of thing. You know like tick the box if you want something to be visible.

  • As explained, you best ask Strava. It is unlikely Garmin would or could control what data is being offered over the API to individual 3rd parties like Strava.

  • Thanks for the replies. All I can say is that I've come from using a Fitbit and it only shared runs with Strava, but I can see that it may be more a Strava thing than a Garmin problem.

I want the same feature. I asked Strava today too. Ideally I exclude other activities than cycling. I use an Edge 520 for cycling only. Now I also have a Venu watch for health tracking and golf. All ad hoc activities showed up in Strava. Even the breathing activity i tested once. Would like to see a simple solution in Garmin Connect.

  • How about a just a two way sync between Garmin and Strava.
