Why did I have so many steps when I just woke up?

I woke up and I'm already over the amount of that I had yesterday. What the ***, this is the reason why I was not sure that I really wanted one of these things. It's hard to trust. I got this yesterday and started using it after I fully charges it. I finished the day with a little over 2900 steps. I woke up today and saw that I had 69 steps. I got out of bed and walked to the kitchen and got some coffee. Looked at my watch and it read over 3200 steps for today. I checked my app and it confirmed what my watch said. Yesterday days totals show as yesterday's totals. These steps are totally separate.

  • You can best verify the steps when you have a look at the daily steps graph in Garmin Connect web (the link for today is https://connect.garmin.com/modern/daily-summary/2020-08-11/steps). You can ananlyze the steps progression during the day (and during the night)  by looking at the blue line. Moving the mouse cursor over it, you can see the step increments each 5 minutes. You can also select a section of the graph to zoom on it closer, alowing you so to investigate the critical part where you suspect some wrong input.

Since the steps are detected with an accelerometer in the watch, steps can be easily falsely detected for example if you do repetitive hand movements. The graph should tell you better when the steps were detected, and help you identifying the source of the false data.
