How do I achieve the Virtual Climb badges?

Hope someone can help me out with this.

I'd like to achieve the Virtual (floor) Climb badges but am struggling to see how I actually record the activity.

I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a step by step guide?  Sorry to sound so dense but I only got my watch a few weeks ago and am still working out all the functions.  It's a Forerunner 630.

Thanks.

  • The FR630 does not have a dedicated floor climbing activity profile, so you need to use for example "Other". After upload to Garmin Connect change the activity type to "Floor climbing" and manually enter the number of floors climbed.

  • Thanks.  But...and sorry if this is a dumb question...if it doesn't have the profile, how does it know the number of floors I've climbed?  And how can I put the right number into Connect (that tallies with whatever the watch recorded)?

  • if it doesn't have the profile, how does it know the number of floors I've climbed?

Floors counting and Floors Climb Activity profile are independent. The first one can exist without the other

And how can I put the right number into Connect (that tallies with whatever the watch recorded)?

Edit the Activity (see the menu of the concerned Activity)

  • how does it know the number of floors I've climbed?

It doesn't. That's why I said you have to enter the floor count manually, and that involves counting manually, or - if your watch is equipped with an altimeter - divide the elevation gain reported by the watch by floor height, which should give you an approximate floor count.

And how can I put the right number into Connect (that tallies with whatever the watch recorded)?

Just edit the floor climbing activity and put the number which you feel is right.

  • Thanks for the help - appreciate your time.

However, I think working from home has turned my brain to mush as I'm still not clear. I may have to actually try this to see what you mean.

So...I select "Other" and walk up my stairs (several times), then upload and select "floor climbing". Then I manually change the number of floors climbed?

My son did a "Mountain Challenge" for scouts recently - running up and down the stairs them like a maniac over a couple of weeks! - so I know that the vertical rise is 3 metres (just short of 10 feet) and that there are 15 steps of 19cm (7 1/2 inches).

Is it as simple as counting the number of times I ascent (so "1" for up and down) and inputting the total into floor count?  I'm not sure if the FR630 comes with an altimeter - I know it does not have a barometer.

I also have a "Hike" app that I downloaded - if that makes a difference?

  • Thanks for the help - I replied below under tmk2.

    That's correct.

I have a FR735XT without an altimeter and without a dedicated floor climbing app. This is what I do:

I run up- and downstairs using the "Strength" profile (beacuse I do it to strengthen my legs muscles). Obviously, this profile (nor in fact any other) does not count any floors so I have to do it more or less manually. I press the lap button whenever I reach the top floor. This way I don't have to keep the count in my head. After the activity is finished, I upload it to Garmin Connect, change its type to "Floor climbing" and I manually enter the floor count by multiplying laps by the number of floors in the building (i.e. in a single ascent). So - for example - when I have 10 laps recorded, and there are 16 floors in the building, then the floor count I have to input is 160. Of course, you can use another method of keeping the count, not necessarily using laps. The bottom line is, the watch won't do it for you automatically.

Using this method I managed to collect all the virtual climb badges.

  • Thanks!

So, for me - doing this at home - I go up and down my single flight of stairs (say 100 times) giving a floor count of 100.  (assuming that is sufficient for a badge) and enter that.

But is there some sort of "check" to verify that I actually have climbed 100 floors?  It seems open to cheating.  Which can't be done, for example, on a run - you can't edit how far you've run.

    No check whatsoever.

Oh yes, you can. I got some indoor cycling badges by manually editing the distance. I wasn't cheating, mind you, it's just my indoor bike does not transmit distance, so my watch always records 0 km, which I later manually edit to whatever my indoor bike shows.

  • No check whatsoever.

That's a shame - though I don't really see how it could check (without an altimeter).  Not that I intend to cheat - what's the point of that?

    Oh yes, you can.
my indoor bike does not transmit distance

I did wonder about that when I saw the indoor bike badges.

Oh, one last question - any idea how floors are needed to get each badge?

    Thanks again!
