Will Garmin or anyone  involved in GPS Development for cars have long distance terristerial AM Radio through its GPS units available without using cellular Data?

Especially, with 5G coming on board soon in US and Canada. I really enjoy listening live AM  radio from Boston/NYC etc.?

I should say without having to incur cellular data charges... Through your mobile provider.

  • AM radio, does that excist anymore? I doubt, nowadays everything is about bandwith and compression to get as much as possible out of the spectre. AM ( amplitude modulation) was famous for taking «it all». That’s why they replaced it with FM ( frequens modulation) who also is kind of a outdated technology.

Actually it is not. Unlike FM, that needs to occupy a certain frequency range, the AM takes only a single frequency. The main disadvantage of AM was not the bandwidth, but the suspectibility to the noise, greatly influencing the quality of the signal.

AM radio, because used especially on longer wave lengths with long distance availability, can be still interesting when travelling over remote areas with no or bad GSM coverage.

On the other hand I suspect the original poster mixes some terms, that he perhaps misunderstood - since he reffers to AM in connection with 5G coverage. So perhaps rather than searching how to listen to a true AM radio, he is interested how to listen to his favorite radio stations he knew on AM, over the 5G. As far as I know, Garmin does not produce any entertairment units or radios, hence I strongly doubt they would be ever adding AM (or digital) radio to their navigation devices. I'd suggest simply using a smartphone instead - you can listen to any web broadcasting radios without problems with every smartphone. No need to have a radio in the navigation.

  • Haha, sorry you are of course right. Only my old brain working slow . But i still remember the morse code. And you probably right about the threaadstarter mix it up too.

What I am getting at is you have no wifi available...Data charges are high for cell phones $ So to listen to a favorite distance territorial station AM or FM? in your car is not available without unlimited data or satellite XM etc.  So suppose with 5G  offered  5 or 6 Favorite long distance AM or FM stations for when people are traveling far in their cars? Just as an add on selling point...They could also find those maybe 50,000 Watt Stations AM or smaller FM stations  willing to join aboard.  Free advertisement for their station, Garmin gets advertised and additional units sold?

5G is a digital technology standard for cellular networks, and has nothing to do with AM or FM radios, that are broadasting in analogue format on much lower frequencies. You could receive web radios over 5G, though.

If you really want to listen AM radios, you'll need a classical oldfashioned car radio - you can find one for $5 on every flea market (or ebay), and new ones from some $20 in many stores.
