Phantom steps and additional active calories

I completed a 6 mile run this morning which I would expect to be around 8000 steps (40 minutes running). When I synced the activity GC showed I had done over 17000 steps. Looking at the detail, it suggests I did over 8500 steps at 0300 / 0400 this morning whilst asleep. Anyone any idea what's going on there?

This has bumped up my active calorie burn significantly for today, from an expected 600 or so, to just under 1000. I had a similar issue yesterday with a massively over inflated active calorie figure, but no phantom steps.

Not had this problem before in the 2 years or so I've been using two Garmin products. I use a Vivosmart 3 for normal daily activity tracking and a Forerunner 235 for runs etc. I use the Android app for syncing.

Seen some similar issues on here from 4 or 5 years ago but no resolution. Couldn't see any recent issues.

Steps are recorded by the accelerometer in the watch. Could it be that your wrist with the watch was resting on some vibrating support? Any series of fine earthquakes in that time in your region? How does the the Movement curve in the Sleep data for that time look like?

    Thanks trux,

Good suggestion. I had a look at the movement chart and it doesn't show any movement at all. It has to be some kind of glitch as that's quite a significant amount of steps to inadvertently record. Baffled!

  • Perhaps the steps came from the other device - did not you forget laying it for example on a washing machine, or another place where it could have been exposed to vibrations?

The other device would have been switched off in a drawer so it wouldn't have recorded anything, but good thought.
