Garmin Connect app trying to open pdf files

Today, as I was trying to open a pdf file that I received via Viber, Garmin Connect app loaded and tried to open the file. It displayed a Course Setup menu and then showed error "Oops! Something went wrong loading your courses."

There is no problem with viewing pdf files that are already downloaded on my phone or internet pdf files. They are  opened by the default app that I use.

I have used both apps on my Android phone for a long time without a problem till now.

To solve this I cleared "open by default" for both Garmin Connect and Viber applications, but the issue continues. Then I reinstalled both apps, but still the same happens.

Is there a setting where I can turn this off?

Any suggestions on how to fix this are welcomed. Slight smile

  • Perhaps you need to first force stop GC mobile

    • Long press the Connect icon, tap Force stop
    • Then Set as default >> Clear defaults
    • With GC still stopped, open a PDF and select the appropriate Open with app then Always.

Just a thought, as I was unable to replicate your specific issue on my S9+ phone running Android 10. Thinking

  • Thank you for your suggestion, unfortunately it didn’t work.

I “Force stop"-ed the GC app.

The “Clear defaults” button was gray/inactive with a text “None set as default”

Tried to open the pdf file from Viber and the GC application runs again.

As I mentioned before, I can open pdf files, which are already downloaded, with the app I’ve chosen as default. Only when I try to open a pdf file received in Viber the GC app starts.

I also tried this: I uninstalled the GC app, tapped on the pdf file from Viber and it started downloading. On the second tap (after the file has been downloaded) when usually the file opens, I got this error “The selected file appears to be unsupported or corrupted.” But If I go to My files / Downloads I can find the same file and open it without a problem.

It’s a really strange and specific issue.

    Thank you again, anyway. Blush

  • You may need to asociate or install an app for reading PDF files. The problem does not seem to be related to Garmin Connect at all. Somehow you just managed to have PDF files inapropriately assocated with the PDF files, but that's definitely not the app for reading those.

  • I have an app for reading pdf files, which is set as default for opening them. I'm perfectly aware that GC is not the app for doing this and I'm not trying to.

I have reinstalled the GC app, so there must be no associations with pdf files.

Yet, when I tap on a pdf file the Connect app starts automaticly, overiding the default app, and tries to open the pdf file and set it up as a course. So it seems, that is somehow related to the Garmin Connect app. This issue started today. I had no problems with the application before that.

  • If Viber is the only app giving you problems - opening PDFs from other apps like your file browser or internet browser passes them to the correct app - then the problem is likely with Viber incorrectly parsing/passing PDF information and not an issue with GCM. If I had to guess, I'd say either a typo in Viber's code results in trying to parse PDFs as some other kind of file type than PDF (perhaps a data file type used by GCM to store course data) or Viber uses some kind of file wrapper for file transfers that happens to share an extension or filetype definition with the data files GCM uses to store/import course data. You'll likely have more luck contacting support on Viber's end.

Alternatively, some part of your phone OS may have become corrupted in such a way that the OS is misinterpreting the file types; a factory wipe and restore may be the only option if that's the case.

  • Probably you are right. I'll try the factory reset. Thank you for your reply. :)

  • This is happing to me too. Did you find a resolve?

I am on an android phone

  • Yes, It's fixed now. I did a factory reset on my phone. Maybe it was an overkill, but it worked for me.

It is a hassle, so before doing that maybe try reinstalling just the apps connected to the issue -Viber, GC and your pdf viewer app.

After reinstalling them make sure the pdf viewer app is set as default for opening pdf files.

    Good luck!Thumbsup

  • I tried adding a pdf reader, force stop on the garmin conncect, and there was nothing set to open with default.

However, the only thing that worked for me was to send the file to my google drive.  Then I opened google drive from my phone's browser, then clicked the file.  After clicking the file, I downloaded it to my phone and it gave me the option where to open it.  YAY! so glad it worked.

  • I am all of a sudden having this same really specific and highly annoying problem.  I too did what you did to try and fix but with same error messages etc. EXACTLY THE SAME.  it's Grey/inactive when i try to clear garmin defaults after the force stop.  I have a pdf viewer that normally works. I tried uninstall/reinstall. If I have garmin connect Uninstaller it gives the same error msg and won't open my pdf file.  I have done nothing different with my phone recently and have had no problems with garmin for the 2 yrs I had it on my phone till now.  Why is garmin overriding when I try to open a pdf from anywhere!!!!
