Change in resting calories

Hi, I have the Garmin Venu for 3 months now and for the first 2, my resting calories were around 1400-1500. For the past month or so, my resting calories have increased to 1700. Does anyone know how it's computed? I want to make sure it's correct and I truly burn that many calories (resting). It's true I've been more active than before. Could this be it?

  • It's true I've been more active than before. Could this be it?

No, it could not. Resting Calories are calculated on the basis of the values of your age, gender, height, weight, and the Activity Class as given in your User Settings. So most likely one (or more) of the values was adjusted when the RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) changed (the weight perhaps?)

Go to the page https://connect.garmin.com/modern/report/41/wellness/last_seven_days, and navigate to the left (see the left arrow symbol near the button Today, at the top of the grpah) to find the week when it changed, and post the screenshot here.

You can also use an online RMR calculator, to make an estimate of your RMR - for example here: https://www.omnicalculator.com/health/rmr. However, the value used by Garmin Connect may be slightly different due to the EPOC (afterburn) effect - that is influenced especially by the parameter Activity Class in your settings, so make sure the adequate level is selected.

  • I checked https://connect.garmin.com/modern/report/41/wellness/last_seven_days and it shows the same RMR for the last 3 months, although i'm sure it was a different value until mid-may. My weight has changed in these 3 month, but not by much. I'm losing and gaining 1 kg. I want to make sure that my watch is functioning correctly since I monitor my caloric intake. The RMR from my watch is close to the one from https://www.omnicalculator.com/health/rmr - 1680 vs 1733 (my watch). I didn't chose an activity level before, so I update my user settings with that info.

  • although i'm sure it was a different value until mid-may

Of course, it will be different in the mid-day. Depending on where exactly you look, only the RMR for the past time of the day may be given. So if you look at 18:00 and your daily RMR is 1733, it will show 18*1733/24 = 1300 kcal

  • I meant the middle of the month on May - mid-May, that's when I noticed the change in RMR, so roughly a month ago. However, I don't see it on the report which is odd.
