Garmin Connect Step Tracking

All of the threads I see for this are old so I am hopeful the issue has been resolved and someone has an answer...

Today I switched from a Samsung Smartwatch to the Fenix 6 Pro Solar. I wear a smartwatch during the day but a different watch at night. When I returned from dinner I checked my steps and nothing had been recorded since I took the watch off 3 hours ago.

My goal is simple. I want to record 15,000 steps each day. Is there a setting in Garmin Connect that tracks steps with the phone and syncs wit the watch as Huawei and Samsung do?

Any help is appreciated. I bought the watch direct from Garmin and am not sure how long I have to return it. Unfortunately, I also ordered some accessories and a bathroom scale before I discovered this issue. Hopefully, it is just a setting.

Your response and your time are greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Rick Culleton

Steps could not be recorded if you took the watch off. If you recorded them with the other watch, see below:

Both watches have to be associated with the same account ID, and on both have to support Physio TrueUp (see Device Settings » General in GM), and it must be enabled on both devices. Alternatively, you have to activate the setting Device Settings » Activity Tracking » Preferred Activity Tracker at the device that you put on, each time you change it.

Garmin will not allow any external sources of steps data, or manual editing of daily steps or activity minutes, because they are contractually bound by many insurance agencies and bigger corporations, who often use the step and intensity minutes data from fitness trackers for calculating benefits in health insurance. You have to track the steps with a Garmin device.

If I understand your answer correctly, the Garmin Connect app lacks the ability to track steps. If that is the case, can I track those steps with Google Fit and sync them to Garmin Connect? If not, how can I go about returning these? The two together were over $3,000. The Fenix 6 x Solar has been opened but the Marq Athlete has not. They were bought directly on Garmin.

  • Garmin Connect app lacks the ability to track steps

It is the device that tracks the steps, not the phone.

can I track those steps with Google Fit and sync them to Garmin Connect?

As I wrote, only Garmin devices are accepted for the steps recording

If not, how can I go about returning these?

If you bought them directly from Garmin, as you wrote, then you'll need to return the devices to Garmin. Call their support to get the return form.
