My father in law have alzheimers and our family is looking for a track device for we keep a eye on him..
So I found some tracker watches. Then I tought as we uses garmin devices and he love his garmin watch, maybe garmin have a app or a device what we can use to track him...
He have a Garmin vivoactive 3 ..
And we are open to a new device if Garmin have one..
Someone have any idea ?????
Thank you

  • Well, you could use your Vivoactive 3, setting up the Ultra Trac mode to reduce the battery consumption, and starting Live Track, which then allows you to follow the location online. However, you'll have to test how long it can keep running. I am afraid the Vivoactive won't work more than a few hours anyway.

You can also try asking on the Connect IQ forum, whether there is a 3rd party app that would sample the position even less frequently than Ultra Trac, to hold longer on a single charge.

Still, you should be aware that the GPS tracking will work only outdoors, so if the person gets lost for example in a subway, in a department store, or anywhere else where there is no GPS signal, it won't help you.

    Trux, thank you very much..

I will try it and see if it will work to us...

    Thank you again!!

  • Actually I realized that no fitness Garmin watch alone can help you without a cell phone with mobile data, paired with it, so in fact it's no viable solution for you. If your father in law could carry the phone, you would not need the watch - there are plenty of apps for tracking phones.

    Pshare,

    Thank you very much!!!

    That helps ..

    Thank you

  • Something like a Tile tracker should be a good solution.

Frankly told, I am not sure the Tile tracker would help. I just had a look at it, and it looks like it has the range of some 200m. People suffering Alzheimer won't respect that range. Once my father (also suffering Alzheimer) disppeared, we found him only after police called us from another city 300km away.

Frankly told, I am not sure the Tile tracker would help. I just had a look at it, and it looks like it has the range of some 200m (it seems to be just an enhanced Bluetooth device). People suffering Alzheimer won't respect that range. Once my father (also suffering Alzheimer) disppeared, we found him only after the police called us from another city 300km away.

  • Rather than a Bluetooth device, you need something having both the GPS and GSM. Search for GPS tracking devices. The first hit on Google gives this: NCElec Mini GPS Tracker, which could be perhaps suitable. Better would be a device that can report the position using the combination of the GPS, WiFi and GSM celltower triangulation (similarly like smartphones can do) - that would work also in most indoor situations. So you'll need to study the specifications and the doumentation little bit deeper, not to buy some useless junk.

You also need a device with good battery life, not needing too frequent recharges. Incident reporting (detecting falls) would not be bad either. And some devices have also a microphone and a laudspeeker, so that you can communicate either with the person, or with people trying to help him/her. Electronic virtual fencing is another useful function - it can send you an alarm when the person leaves the pre-defined teritory.

That told, searching directly a senior tracking device, instead of a simple GPS tracker, might be the best, because it should have all of that, and perhaps even more.

  • The following review of senior GPS tracking devices may be helpful:

The 30 Best GPS Trackers for Seniors

Note: I did not check the specs of any of the promoted devices, and do not know whether it is really an independent review, or rather a sponsored list. Frankly told, it looks more like the later, seeing all links point to Amazon, and contain the referrer ID. I have little bit doubts about the quality of the review, since they promote also Garmin Vivofit that cannot be used for the tracking standalone (without a phone). So you'll need to verify which of the promoted devices can really work standalone (must have a SIM card slot). Still, I think you can find some inspiration in the review.
