Pairing issues when a tablet is nearby

I've had an F3 for a long time and just bought a 6X Sapphire, but for the last few days I've had real problems with it not auto reconnecting whenever the BT connection is lost between the watch (v 9.00 firmware) and my phone (Samsung) which uses the Garmin Connect app (latest version). Every time I walk out of range from the phone the watch face shows a pairing code, which fails, then it keeps attempting to repair until I cancel it all out. After literally half a day trying to wonder wtf is going on I realised (with help from another post in the 6X forum) that my Samsung tablet is causing the problem. If I turn the bluetooth off on that, the phone and watch function as expected. The tablet also has Garmin Connect installed but I haven't actually got round to adding the 6X as a bluetooth device in the tablet connection settings so I don't know how it's connecting up and causing this problem. The 6X shows in the devices list in the GC app but it isn't connected and as far as I am aware never has been ia the tablet.

I can't say I'm very happy with this really, OK I have a workaround but it means I now can't use my tablet if I'm away from the phone to watch or listen to any media using BT headphones as I have to turn the BT off or suffer the endless pairing attempts on the watch. I could do it but would have to have all three devices on me while doing so. I also use GC on the tablet a lot as it's easier to read than my phone. This seems like a bug to me, but was keen to hear what others think. Thanks.

  • What about removing the GC app on the tablet, and using GC Web on it, instead? That's what I do too. GC Web is more complete and detailed anyway.

  • Thanks, will take a look at that but IMHO I should still be able to use both devices with the app. Ok I might need to turn the bluetooth off on the other device temporarily I guess but I shouldn't have to put up with the watch essentially not working like a watch every time I stray more than 5m away from my phone.

  • I have no idea whether it should work or not with two devices simultaneously. The specifications do not tell anythig about the possibility to use a Garmin watch with multiple devices simultaneously. I just gave you a tip how to work with the device efficiently. It is up to you, whether you want to use the advice, avoiding so the problems, or whether you prefer waiting till it starts working alone as you think it should.

You could perhaps also simply remove the BT pairing watch-tablet, using so the syncing exclusively over the phone, while still being able to use the app for acessing the account (without syncing the watch over it)

  • Hello mate, thanks again, btw I wasn't being critical of you at all, I appreciate the advice. The watch and tablet have never been paired and it wasn't in my list of paired devices so quite confusing as to what is communicating with what to cause the issue.

  • The watch and tablet have never been paired and it wasn't in my list of paired devices

Ah, OK, I see. Perhaps you could try the following (though I did not test, it, so am not sure whether it can help):

On the tablet, assuming it is an Android device, go to Android settings » Apps » Connect » Permission, click the triple dot symbol at the top and select All Permissions, and try revoking Bluetooth related permissions - in my case I see "Pair with Bluetooth devices" and "Access BT settings", but the list may differ accroding to the device and according the Android version. It may not help at all, but I am afraid it is all what I can advise apart from my previous hint to use GC Web instead, on the tablet.

  • Trux's suggestion is a good one... I might give that a go myself.

I'd be fascinated to know if the problem goes away if you pair the watch with the tablet.  That would seem to be the best outcome if it worked.

  • I actually meant revoking the use of BT for the GC app on the tablet completely, but pairing the watch with the tablet is certainly worth of trying, too. You just have to watch out not to finish with two different accounts (you can verify the account ID in Menu » Settings » App Diagnostics » Displayname).

  • This will be no help to you, I'm afraid, but just as a data point I have a similar setup and I have never witnessed the problem you describe. I have....

6X Pro Solar running 9.92 Beta (but the behaviour is unchanged with any firmware)

Galaxy S10+ paired with the watch

Huawei Mediapad M5 10 with GCM installed, but not paired with any Garmin device

It doesn't matter whether Bluetooth is on or off on the tablet, or how often or how far I move away from my phone. I have never seen the pairing number appear except when expected. I have no idea what the problem could be. I think it's a job for Garmin support.

Edit : I just installed GCM on two old Samsung phones, with Bluetooth enabled, but not paired to the watch. Still there is no problem. Nothing tries to pair to the watch and the watch doesn't try to pair with anything else. Everything is as it should be.

  • Thanks for sharing that.

I suspect that the issue is one where GC has been paired with another watch - mine has been paired with an F3, but not with the new F6.

I have raised the issue with Garmin support Grimacing

  • I actually have three watches paired with my phone, none with my tablet. F3HR, 5X+ and 6X. So I don't think it's a multi-watch issue either.

The old watches are usually turned off, but at times I will have all three turned on at once and syncing back and forth between them when performing various tests.
