Virtual climb badge

Hi,

I went for the 1500ft badge, but fell short by a foot and was awarded the 1000ft badge, so was determined to go for it again.

This time I went for the 734ft badge and did 770, but was only awarded the 334 badge. Why??

Then today I went for the 1500ft badge by doing 1610ft, but havent been awarded anything yet? Why please?

Kind regards

Chris

  • In fact, what is important for the Floor Climb badges is the value of the Elevation Gain (shown only on the web interface, not on the phone app!), and not the Ascent (as stated on the badge description). The Elevation Gain is measured by the barometric altimeter (or alternatively, at outdoor floor climbs with GPS enabled, it can be re-calculated with the use of topographical data, when you turn on the option Elevation Correction on the Activity page in Garmin Connect Web), while the Ascent seems to be calculated with the the combination of barometric, accelerator, and gyro data (depending on the device). In some cases it can happen that the barometric altimeter gives a lower value than the Ascent (for example due to simulatenous atmospheric pressure changes, due to the pressure sensor hole being clogged with sweat or dirt, due to wind gusts, etc.)

  • So we are climbing floors blind basically.

It's just pot a case of keep trying, even though we have climbed the metres/feet needed.

I will try the GPS enabled and elevation correction.

    Many thanks

  • What I did, to have better control over my performance, when doing Floor Climbs, is that I added a custom screen to the activity profile with the values of the elevation (I added both barometric and GPS elevation), and the total elevation gain. And I mostly run floors outdoors, on hill slopes with GPS enabled in the Floor Climb Activity, hence even if the barometer reports wrong value, I simply activate the Elevation Corrections in GC Web, and get the right value.

Hello, I have also problem with these badges. I did two individual climb floors activities yesterday to reach badges for 334 ft and 735 ft. But I reached only badge for 334 ft. I checked the elevation gain and it seems to be okay (227 m / 77 floors) at the second activity. I usually use metric units, so I have tried to change it into imperial units but without any effect.

  • The elevation gain on the web interface, is that when i login to my account online? why is that different from the app when its the watch that loads it to the app and then the web?

It is kind of gutting not getting it when putting the work in, but at the same time it only motivates me to do it again as i have seen improvements on my floors per minute in 20min increments.

I do my floors on a 100 step stairwell at my work place during this lockdown, its been quiet so thought id utilise my time. I do a lot of hill climbs, but thought i'd do it in a stairwell for time.

I've got 334 and 1000ft badge for two separate climbs using the same stairwell, so just need to do more to get the badges. Mine states 155m / 50 floors which is 508ft.

Please share the activity as weblink, and post the link here.

Yes, it is on Garmin Connect Web. The values are not different on GC Web vs. GC Mobile. They are just more complete, since the web interface has generally much more details on most screens, and more functionality than the phone app (being designed primarly for computers with bigger screens). GCW shows the Ascent values like the CGM too, but in addition, it shows also the Elevation Gain.

Hello  here is the link .

There is only one problem with this activity. I started the record on the top of stairs and the elevation graph is in the negative values, but everything else is recorded as it should be, including elevation gain/lost, floors count etc.

Yes, indeed, it looks all right. Everything seems to be in the right range. Try toggling the activity type (at the top, above the title) to another sport (i.e. Running), and after reloading the page wait a few seonds, then set it back to Floor Climbing, and wait again a minute or two whether the badge will not be re-assigned correctly.

If it does not help either, export the activity in the FIT format (the option Export Original in the cogwheel menu), delete the activity from GC, and reimport it from the FIT file.

This is certainly not the reason. All my four Floors badges were done in this way, and it did not pose a problem.

Nothing changed. I tried to set different activity yesterday, now I tried the second advice (export/import *.fit file). It does not matter, I will have to repeat the attempt to reach 735 ft badge, but I hope, I will not have to repeat also 1000 ft and 1500 ft activities Smile.

  • Well, perhaps Garmin uses a different ft/meter conversion than the standard :)

You better do each time some 20% more, to be sure Slight smile I did always ~50% more for that reason, and it worked every time.
