i just bought the Garmin Cadence 2 (nice tech)  added Garmin connect  to my smartphone,(err i guess..)  hit the road and ..... nothing. What the *** is that? The rides appear in my online account stupidly afterward, but i cant see my cadence and speed in the app when im riding.

I hope ive got this wrong because that is no product worth having

  • You can see the live data from the Cadence sensor on any compatible Garmin device, not on the phone, though.

Trux - firstly thanks for taking the time to get back to me - i was beginning to think i was going nuts. So Garmin dont want to lose the opportunity to sell me another gizmo i dont need because my smartphone can do that stuff anyway. Great technology, a weak hustle business model.

  • Nobody can force you to keep the sensor if you do not like the way it works. However, this is the way all Garmin devices work - the watches, Edge bike computers, and other their devices are the central units processing and displaying all live data. The app is just an interface for storing result files on the server, and for watching the statistic of you past activities. The app was never designed for watching live data (perhaps with the exception of heart-rate and steps). And sensors (like the Cadence 2, and many others), are just accessories designed to be used with a Garmin device. Of course, you have the full right not to accept the functional model Garmin chose - you can return the sensor to the dealer, and buying a product fulfilling your needs better. However, nowhere on the product description is written that you can watch live data from the sensor on the GC app.

Problem(s) solved. If you dont want to buy a Garmin bike computer there is an alternative. Download the IpBike app + IpSensor Man app on Android. Pair your Garmin Speed Sensor 2 and Cadence 2 sensor to your smartphone (I used Bluetooth) , then add them to the App.  The app works with the sensors - job done, hit the road.

Zwift - despite all the hype about expensive power meters and customised wingdizmos you can crank your bike using a dumb, (cheap!) magnetic resistance turbo trainer. Pair the Cadence 2 sensors with your computer, create a Zwift account and install the software, choose unregistered trainer and you can have a basic fun experience and get exercize. It's all good until the free trial runs out, then it's on you. Of course, if you want the full experience you need to get your nerd on and your wallet out, and register for a PhD in Cycling Technology Science, or something..
