Daily steps went backwards?

Hi, I have been working on the 10,000 steps per day and have almost hit 30 days in a row. However one evening I got up to 10,033 steps and went to bed and the next day I just went to look back at my step history and noticed it had only registered 9996 however I remember seeing 10,033 before I went to bed. I was 26 days through the challenge so this was super frustrating. How do I fix this?

For extra context there is a Garmin badge for 10,000 steps for 30 days in a row I was aiming for which I've put in extra work to get and 26 days in I find it recorded me less than what my watch had said I did that one day and makes it under 10,000 which breaks my streak for achieving the badge.

  • It is a good idea always syncing the app with the account before the day ends (tapping the double arrow circle up right), and then verifying whether the step count updated also on the Garmin Connect Web interface. That is what I do since I bought the device almost a year ago, and did not miss a step yet.

  • I sync when I wake up, after each activity, and toward the end of the day just to be sure. It's not unusual for me to sync 6 or 7 times per day. The sync process through the app is quick and painless enough.

I normally sync my device multiple times per day too and was pretty sure I had synced it to my phone as well before I went to bed. It's the Forerunner 645 Music.

Somehow I seem to have lost steps after syncing. Was just disappointed that I might have to do another 30 days of trying to hit 10,000 steps each day because this broke my streak.

Does anyone know if Garmin moderators reply to our posts as well?

  • Sometimes (rarely) Garmin people do but I've never heard of anyone getting their step results changed.

Fair enough. Looks like I'm gonna have to do another 30 days.

  • Somehow I seem to have lost steps after syncing.

This happens especially to people who have inadvertenty associated the device with multiple accounts (for example they have reinstalled the phone app, and did not notice they created a new account instead of using the old one). The watch then gets confused and some part of the data may land in the other account.

Follow the instructions from the support document Data is Missing from My Garmin Account After Syncing to resolve such issue.

It can exceptionally happen on the device specific subforums, but practically never on the more general GC forums. This is primarily a user forum for the mutual help.

Ugh! I am 32 weeks pregnant and yesterday broke my step count record with over 25000 steps. It was synced to the app, I even screenshot it. This morning I was wondering why I hadn't received my badge for 25k steps...well now I only have 24000 steps! I mysteriously lost 1k steps overnight!

I also have the 645 music.

  • Congrats to the achievement!

It was synced to the app, I even screenshot it.

There are actually two parts of the syncing. The steps and HR are being transferred from the watch to the app continuously, without the necessity to sync. But when you do the true sync, the values get synced also to the server, and that's the moment it is safer to verify whether it really happened, by looking on your account on Garmin Connect Web. If you see any discrepancy between the watch, the app, and the web, after having completed the sync, then you still have the time to react and try to look what went wrong (for example syncing over the USB cable to Garmin Express, or looking at the Device Sync Audit on the app, or trying to sync again, of fixing a corrupted FIT file, or restarting the watch, the app, or signing out and in, or whatever else seems reasonable at the moment).

I actually contacted Garmin Support and they took my screenshots and they're working on the case. We went through everything today.

    Thanks!
