Garmin connect runs in background, starts even after force to stop

How do I stop garmin connect from starting and running in the background?

All notifications are switched off, after the run I just open app sync with watch and force to stop. That is all I need. But app keeps starting and running in the background, why? what are the triggers?

Why is it so important to garmin to run the app all the time? Is it intention to collect and report or just badly designed app?

I do not want to switch off the notifications about Garmin connect running in background, because I do want to stop it running and not not knowing about it. :o)  It will run in the background, but android will not report it. That is not a solution.

Yes, it does not take that much battery, but "mosquitoes in numbers will eventually kill the bull". And currently I have the luxury of charging phone 2x a week.

Any solutions??

thanks

Hm, to be sure I just tried it after your post again, and have stopped the GCM app on my phone. It did not come back (it is 12 hours now). Are you sure you are really stopping it? How did you do it? Over Android settings » Apps » Connect » Force to Stop, or by swiping up in the Task Manager, or just simply by closing the GCM screen?

The app normally does diverse tasks - syncing data like steps, HR, breath-rate, calendars, newsfeed, updating weather forecasts, sending diverse notification both ways, etc. etc. If you do not care about all that, you can also consider desinstalling the app entirely, and syncing only over USB cable to the computer. However, as I told, personally I did not manage to reproduce the issue you describe, when I really shut down the app.

  • Thanks for the reply.

Only gmail, chat and calendar are allowed in the background (power manager settings).

After run and sync I have to switch BT off, close GCM (swiping up in the Task Manager) and then I get notification GCM runs in background so I have to Android settings » Apps » Connect » Force to Stop.

If I start BT for earphones GCM will pop up to background. Plus various times I have no idea why it starts. It is really persistent.

There are some other apps(stock, weather about 5 of them ) which occasionally pops up that they are running background. It is when I unlock the phone these apps check something and die so notifications go away after few seconds. But GCM stays.

All the syncing (steps, calendar ...) is off. I could un-install the GCM, and use strava or other to look at progress. But where I run I have no PC and I want to see how I did. And it is really crude solution for garmin product.

I have Forerunner 735XT and looking for fenix not sure if upgrade will help.

  • App auto start with android. I test in the setting of android to stop it. When i switch off auto start, keep on in background and something else ; garmin connect not connect to my watch (forerunner 235). So if i want a connection bluetooth between watch and phone, i have to keep garmin connect always on (background). Strange decision by garmin. Because bluetooth is'nt enable when i don't use the watch to do sport.

  • Because bluetooth is'nt enable when i don't use the watch to do sport.

BT is on permanently on the watch (at least on all the models I am familiar with), unless you disable it manually for some reason. You may be confusing it with GPS that is (by default) turned on only during outdoor activities.

  • I'm agree. I turn off bluetooth some time i need only the time and not all function (with the smartphone). But the problem is if i turn off "the auto start , or "maitain background" for example (i don't need garmin tur on all the day long), my forerunner does'nt connect with the bluetooth. It's more a rules of the apps.

  • I am afraid I do not understand what you are looking for. You'd like that Garmin Connect continues to sync with your watch even when you turn off the BT?  Or even when you shut down the GC app? It does not make any sense to me. I am afraid you need to reformulate the problem more clearly.

  • Laughing Yeah i'm gonna try. It's not easy for me. Let me some time to be clear and i'll come back soon !

  • switch BT on the phone off

    terminate GCM

force to stop GCM, if it starts up again force to stop it again 2x or 3x

then sometimes I can go (without GCM running in the background) several days before I need it.

yes it is very bad app design

  • When I swipe GC away from Android's task manager, it never comes back, unless I start it again intentionally. I do not need to repeat anything, and do not need to stop BT. I'd tell it is a pretty standard design.
