How to time defined workouts

Garmin software is not recording timings for defined "workouts". I have a workout called "10k" which is defined as 6.2 miles. Garmin will record the times for each lap, where the laps are the 6 miles, the point 2 of a mile making up the 10k & final slow down after I have completed the workout. However it includes the slow down in the overall workout time whereas the workout should end precisely on 6.2 miles. I have a screenshot to illustrate the problem.

  • Yes, you get times for each lap, and the total activity time (including warm up, and cool down). That's how it supposed to work. If you want to see the time of the 6.2 miles run, have a look at the column Cummulative Time on the Laps screen on Garmin Connect Web (Garmin Connect Mobile shows only a lmited subset of the data, so the column is not there).

  • Thanks. We're baffled as my son has an older watch and his record time for 10k takes into account the fastest 10k ran between him starting and finishing, ie the fastest 10k in a total run of day 10.2k including warm up and cool down. Mine just records the entire time between starting and finishing, covering the whole 10.2k. Of course the correct time can be easily calculated but I'd like to see the record time show the best 10k. Of course I can always switch off when I reach exactly 10k on my run.

  • Mine just records the entire time between starting and finishing, covering the whole 10.2k.

It should not. Perhaps you have a buggy software version on it. You should speak to the Support. As a workaround, you can open the activity in Garmin Connect Web, and trim it (see the option for trimming in the menu after clicking the cogwheel symbol up right on the activity page).

When trimming, switch to the Distance mode, trim it to 10K, either starting at the beginning, or at a later point (if it gives a better time), then switch back to the Tme mode, and add 1s to it. If you don't, you risk that the last GPS point in the trimmed activity is a few meters before the 10k, and it would not be valid to the 10k PR.

Once trimmed, you can click the cogwheel symbol again, and select the option Set as PR.

  • I ran 3.11 miles this morning at 23m58s.

On my watch it recorded my record 5k as 23m57 and record 1m as 7.33.

I trimmed the 3.11miles at the end to exactly 5k to see what happens and as you suggested it went slightly under 5k and after synching my watch lost my 5k record which is understandable. But it also lost my 1mile record which was during 0.5mile and 1.5mile ie not trimmed.

My summary. Define workouts to be a little more than the real distance (or don't bother with workouts). Run 0.01mile longer than required. Don't trim to the bone.

  • As I wrote, you can trim to the desired distance, switch to the Time mode, add a second, and then you'll have the full distance. Alternatively, if you know the true time of the record, you can also edit the record on the page Personal Records manually, without any trimming at all.

However, all this should not be necessary at all, just necessary in some exceptional case. The watch should normally pick up the fastest 5km section from a run even if the total distance is 20km. If it does not work in your case, check whether you have the latest firmware version (with Garmin Express), and if no fixed firmware is available, contact the support and report the issue.
