Sleep data doesn't auto-populate

I recently got the Vivoactive 4 and I was expecting the sleep tracking features to be similar to the Vivoactive I had years ago, but instead my watch doesn't even track my sleep unless I enter my sleep and wake times manually on the app immediately after I wake up. I set my "usual" sleep and wake times in the app, though those are only accurate to within about an hour. I've been reading forum posts and help articles for a week and I still can't figure out what's going wrong-- how do you get the Garmin app to show your sleep data without manually entering information every single morning?

Yes and it's why I've been manually entering the times in the morning. Is there a way to not do that?

  • You do not need to enter any times in the morning. As long as you wear the watch during the night (and a few hours before you go to bed), and it detects correctly your HR, after syncing the watch to the phone, the sleep monitoring data appear in Garmin Connect. They typically look like this:

I only get that after manually entering times in the morning. I have two weeks of no sleep data at all even though I synced my watch to my phone every morning.

  • Go to the Device Settings (tap the watch symbol at the top), then tap User Settings, and verify whether the Normal Bed Time and Normal Wake Time are set. Then go also to the Devicce Settings » User Settings on Garmin Connect Web, and set the same times there. And finally go to the User Settings also on your watch, and again make sure that  identical times are set there too.

Normally it should be suficient setting the time just on one place, but in some cases setting from one place can overwrite others, so it is better to set them all. If your sleep time varies, you better set the time with a sufficiently wide margin, so that the sleep is detected even if you go to sleep earlier, or wake up later (for example 20:00 - 11:00).

I had no idea those times were saved in so many places. Thanks for your help, that seems to have done the trick!
