Garmin Connect App on Android phone now flooded with ads

Unfortunately these ads disrupt everything I am doing outside of Connect including typing, reading the screen and running other apps.

Why did this suddenly start happening? If I cannot stop this I will be forced to consider other products and apps to get away from the problems....

Has my Android phone or Connect app been hacked?

    If you experience this issue outside of connect, then what makes you think it's an issue with the connect app? My connect app does not bother me with any ads. Ever. Not a single time.

    Yes, probably you installed an application containing adware, but it ain't Garmin Connect, unless you installed an unofficial version from a source different than the Garmin Play store. No idea why you think it comes from Garmin Connect, and how you believe that starting to use other products could help. The best prevention from being infected with malware, is limiting the installation of applications from unknown developers, or from sources whose reputation cannot be verified. You can also get infected if you are not careful with email, and when visiting dubious websites, opening links or confirming dialogues that you do not understand well.
