App launches by itself randomly

The android app launches itself randomly without any rhyme or reason. Suggestions? I've uninstalled the app 3 times. I've rebooted my phone. There are no permissions requested.

  • What exactly you mean that the application launches itself? That it opens, or just that it starts running as a background process?

If it is the second case, then it is the normal way apps work - they launch whenever a system intent is sent to them, and they need to process it, and stay then in the background. In the case of Garmin Connect, it serves to feed the watch with fresh data (i.e. weather, transfer of diverse system statuses, etc), and to get data from the watch (steps, HR, activites, etc.) and transmitting them to the GC server.

If you do not wish that the app sits in the backgound, but do not want to remove it from the phone entirely, there are diverse possibilities to suppress the auto-start - read some tips for example here: https://joyofandroid.com/how-to-disable-auto-start-apps-in-android/. You can check out also this article: https://www.maketecheasier.com/stop-android-apps-from-starting-by-themselves/ or you can google up even more solutions. However if you do so, and block the app from launching when it needs to, do not be surprised if some of the functionality ceases to work properly.

If it is the first case, and the app opens on the screen without any reason, then I did not observe such behaviour yet, so cannot advice much. Most likely seems to be an accidental tap on the screen, but I guess you already excluded such possibility. If you really want to find out, you could for example install Android Studio on your computer, connect the phone to it with a USB cable, and analyze the Logcat for the moment when it happens. Or you could install one of many event logger apps available in the Google Play store, and look for the problem there.

  • I have exactly the same issue.

And it is definitely the first case. The app can launch every minute over and over again, while I am writing emails, watching stories or whatever, so no accidental taps.

I am in contact with the support, but they seem surprised with this kind of problem. At least I found that I wasn't alone with this issue...

  • It doesn't seem to be a very common issue. This is the first time I hear about it.

I would check the permissions and make sure that the app got them all.

What version of Android are you using and which phone/tablet?

  • Have the same problem dins about a month. Connect launches itself on its own.

  • Do you mean that app starts in the foreground? Or do you mean in the background? It needs to run in the background for the connection with the watch so the watch get notifications, weather, calendar etc.

    It should autostart if closed.

  • Hi,

I had a similar problem some time ago. The problem was related to the watches faces installed.
It was fixed by the Garmin team, here is their solution, which worked for me:

Our team recommends removing the two watches faces that are downloaded. Once that is done, then lets remove the device from the connect app & the phone's bluetooth then re pair. Please let me know if you still have the same issue after this and I will forward this update to our team.

Remove device from Garmin Connect and your phone’s Bluetooth:

    1. Open the Connect Mobile app
    2. Tap the 3 lines in the upper left corner (Android) or Tap More (iPhone)
    3. Touch Garmin Devices
    4. Touch the name of your device
    5. Touch the three dots in the top right corner
    6. Touch Remove Device
    7. Confirm you want to Remove the Device

Go to your Mobile Phone’s Settings:

    1. Go into Settings
    2. Touch Bluetooth
    3. Locate the Garmin Device in your BT settings and Remove or Forget this Device
    4. Confirm this action
    5. Turn off your Phone’s Bluetooth
    6. Restart your Phone
    7. After phone is restarted, turn on Bluetooth

Next step is to re-pair your device with the Phone:

    1. Open Garmin Connect Mobile
    2. Tap the 3 lines in the upper left corner (Android) or Tap More (iPhone)
    3. Go to Garmin Devices
    4. Touch Add Device
    5. Tap Browse All Compatible Devices
    6. Select Forerunner> Forerunner 45/45s
    7. Touch Start on the Garmin Connect Mobile screen
    8. On the watch- press and hold the middle button
    9. Go to settings icon>phone>pair phone
    10. Touch Yes when prompted to pair with your device
    11. Type in the code displayed on your watch or confirm the pairing request
