I paid $1,200 for a watch that doesn't count steps when on the elliptical machine and the app doesn't record my heart rate properly. Elliptical reports avg HR 144, and meter on HR shows 133 and my High HR is 103. It doesn't update properly.

Before in 2.5 hours, 12,000 steps. Now 2.5 hours, 9,100. I opened the app and when I swing my arms back and forth on the handle bars, it doesn't count them. If I bounce up and down, it counts them.

Why pay so much for a watch that doesn't work properly?

  • I opened the app and when I swing my arms back and forth on the handle bars, it doesn't count them. If I bounce up and down, it counts them.

That sounds reasonable to me. When you walk, there is allways a vertical motion at each step. If it does not count steps on the elliptical machine, then stop holding the handlebar with the hand where you wear the watch. Alternatively, you can attach the watch to your ankle instead of the wrist.

Why have an elliptical setting on the watch if they didn't include body dynamics in the algorithm?

  • Counting of steps requires the vertical motion, and no holding on the handlebar, regardless of the activity type. If you hold the handlebars, the accelerometer has no chance to detect the steps, regardless of the settings.
