BMR too high, can you manually set it ???

Anyone found a work around for changing this ?

My BMR is 2080 calories and I should be at about 1750 according to all other calculations,

I tried dropping my weight  from to 75kg to 50kg   thto get the 1750 but then my workouts were tracking only 300 Cal's rather than the 5-600 Cal's I'm actually burning.

So frustrating when you pay  a so  much for a watch !

  • I am not sure where you see BMR in Garmin Connect, because AFAIK it is nowhere shown. Garmin uses RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) which, unlike the BMR, includes also an estimate of those calories required for activities like digestion and being mentally alert, so it is higher than BMR. Some Garmin watches which feature an optical heart rate sensor will also take into account heart rate and your VO2 Max estimate information to further provide a more accurate resting calorie measurement.

  • Thanks for the reply, I guess the software and algorithms are smarter than me Joy

Mistook RMR for BMR which makes sense now looking at the daily amount of my calculated RMR compared to my BMR.

Still think it's slightly over compensated but at least I understand the workings behind it now.

  • Hi there, RMR and BMR are almost the same for practical uses. This is not the problem. The problem is that Garmin calculates your RMR plus some calories on top, that Garmin believes you are going to burn during the day, based on the data you have entered in the app. Then it adds activity calories on top of the activity calories that it has already predicted you will burn. Also, during the night when you sleep you burn less, which is not included in Garmin's calculation. On top of this - you need to subtract the calories that you have burned during the night from the RMR calories for the day, because they are in the calculation for the previous day, since Garmin starts calculating calories again as of 00:00. I hope you can understand what I mean. If not just trust me and do it and you will see much lower target for the day. But that\s not all. When you do activities Garmin calculates again resting calories in this activity. This is something it should not do because these calories are already included in the RMR (BMR). I absolutely do not understand why Garmin cannot do this calculation properly. I figured this out within 3 days and I am not an expert whatsoever. Before that Garmin was telling me that I need to eat a tremendous amount of hamburgers even on days when I was just sitting on the couch. I decided to check their calculations after I almost got a heart attack.

  • My BMR has been measured and is about 400 calories less than RMR used by Garmin.  I do not sync it to My Fitness Pal as a result , so I do not overestimate my calorie burn.  With my BMR 75% of the estimated RMR, I wonder if my calorie burn rate calculated by Garmin should also be discounted.  I expect I’ll figure this out by trial and error in a month or so, but would be grateful for any insights on this subject.  Venu 2 user.
