920XT and Vivoactive 3 losing connection to Moto G 3rd Gen

I usually have occasional loss of connection - toggling bluetooth on the phone usually resolves it. If not a phone and/or watch restart will do the job.

Then.... I few days ago I lost connection and nothing has worked to get them reconnected apart from removing and re-pairing (a complete pain) both devices. But that is only a temporary remedy before connection is lost again.

Not sure if the Connect app updated - it is now v4.17.  I don't think it coincided with any watch updates (both watches are at latest versions). The fact that both watches are affected points to the phone or Connect. Other bluetooth functionality is OK on the phone so my finger is pointing at Connect.

I have tried everything, going right back to removing devices, uninstalling Garmin Connect, clearing bluetooth cache (both Connect and Bluetooth Share), pairing from scratch etc.

When paired, connection is OK for a while before being lost again.

Anything else I can try?

I don't see many people shouting with the same issue.

Thanks!

  • Check out the battery optimizing parameters, possbily your Moto shuts down BT after some time. Could be also related to the lock screen parameters, if it happens while the phone is locked.

  • Just for the record I found a pattern. Occasionally when I get in the car the action of the phone trying to connect to the car disconnects the Garmin and neither ends up connected.

Previously a simple toggle of bluetooth would resolve it. Now I've realised, for whatever reason, it leaves the garmin in a state where nothing short of re-pairing will get it connected to the phone again.

I've now found that un-pairing the car from the phone seems to release the deadlock and the Garmin will connect again.

So something peculiar with my phone/bluetooth/car/garmin combination!
