Turning Bluetooth off and on, on both devices doesn't help either. I haven't tried reinstalling the app yet..
Try rather the tips shown in my first post in this thread. Most likely it is due to some aggressive battery optimizing or safety / privacy parameters of your phone, that the phone OS applied on the app, after the update. Not necessarily the fault of Garmin.
Thank you, but your first post seems to be specific to problems with Huawei phones. Mine is an old Motorola Moto E2 with Android 6.0. I've tried your suggestion looking into the battery saving settings anyway. There is an option to turn battery usage optimzation on or off for individual apps, which I tried with Garmin Connect, but unfortunately that didn't help.

OK, I see. You can also try this thread with more troubleshooting tips for sync/connection problems:
Today also tried reinstalling the app.
The symptom is still the same:
This bug is only happening since version 4.27. I have been using this combination of watch and phone since May 2018 without having this problem, through all of the watch firmware and app updates.
It looks like this issue has been reported by many users in the forum and in the PlayStore reviews.
I hope that Garmin developers will fix it soon so that the next update restores the old behaviour!
Thanks.
For the records, and for anyone who is still seeing the same issues:
After pairing the watch via the phone's bluetooth menu it now works reliably for me too. I previously had always paired it in the app only (which I believe was also what Garmin had recommended?). See also forums.garmin.com/.../1015508
