Memory Full on VivoActive 3 and won't connect to Garmin Connect any more

After having connected my VivoActive 3 to my MacBook for a charge:

- It no longer has the custom watch faces I have downloaded

- It consistently gives me a "memory full" message

- It refuses to connect to Garmin Connect on my iphone XS

I went through this forum and found nothing. I did see other complaining about the "Memory Full" issue.

No solution.

I have no additional apps on the watch, no new watch faces, nothing. It only has the original watch-faces that comes with the watch when you buy it new.

Please help - I have 3 VivoActive 3 devices - (me and my 2 boys train with them) - so the struggle is real and urgent.

  • Did you try removing the old activity files from the folder //GARMIN//Activity/ (on the watch, while connected over the USB cable)?

Hi, thanks for answering Trux. I just had a look - that directory is empty. I have managed to synch to my MacBook now. It still refuses t re-establish a link with my phone.
I removed the O_FILE.ERR file from the device also. Found something on the forums that said that may work (it din't).

Any other possible causes that you can think of?

  • I don't know about a Mac, however, years ago I solved a similar issue by running Chkdsk from a DOS window on my PC on the connected watch storage. There must be a Mac equivalent.

  • You could also try doing a master reset - look up the key combination in the user manual for your watch

Hi All, I have done the master reset. Deleted all the content under the Directory "SUMMARY". No luck. I t seems as if bluetooth connectivity has just disappeared from the watch's side. I am off to the dealer quickly to see if it behaves in the same way there.

  • Just for the case, you do not know it - after the master reset you need to pair the device with your phone anew. Follow the instructions from your user manual for the first installation.

Hi, I am happy to report that the dealer could resolve the problem. Here is what the person at the dealer did:

    1) He did a firmware update by connecting my watch to his laptop.

    2) He asked me to delete the "Connect IQ" app from my iPhone and reinstall it from scratch.

I logged-in on the reinstalled app using my log-in name and password, the phone connected to the watch and everything was ok (I suppose this on its own may have worked without step 1).

Just one last thing worth mentioning. After all this, the GPS would not acquire the satellites (yes, I was outside under a cloudless sky). So a soft-reset was done (hold in the button for 15 seconds until the watch goes off, then press the button again to turn it back on). Then only the watch started acquiring satellites and set the time.

The overall impression this left me with is that the software on this watch is not quite "sorted" yet (or maybe it is the hardware?). I did nothing strange or unusual to trigger this series of events, I simply plugged in my watch to my macbook to charge it - an action I often take with no resulting problems.

It had a happy ending though. I hope this post helps someone else!
