Step counter in Garmin Connect app

Does Garmin Connect app on phone has automatic step counter?

I carry my phone in pocket most of the time, and I don't have Fitbit or iwatch or similar to sync. So, why can't the app have a feature to track steps, like any other step tracking app like Samsung health. This way, I don't need to get another device or app to track my steps.

  • Does Garmin Connect app on phone has automatic step counter?

    No.

why can't the app have a feature to track steps, like any other step tracking app like Samsung health.

Because it's not a step tracking app.

If you don't have a Garmin device, then why do you insist on using the Garmin app instead of any other app that would better suit your needs?

  • You need a Garmin device to make this happen. Budget option: Vivofit 3. There's even a belt clip available for it.

I already have forerunner 220. Just don't want another device.

    Thanks.

  • In that case you do not need your phone for counting the steps

  • The Forerunner 220 is one of the last Forerunners that didn't track daily steps.

The 230 and 235 were the first to integrate step tracking but are now out of date.

If you can justify leaving the 220 behind, the Forerunner 45 and 245 are phenomenal as daily-wear watches that integrate smart-watch functions. (you get a lot more out of the 245 but on a budget the 45 is basically feature-comparable to the 235)

    See DCR's reviews of those:

    Thank you. This is informative.

Got my 220 long time back and it just works. I guess, it's time to upgrade.

At times I can't carry my watch all the time, and then I don't get the steps through out the day, and using a note at to count those steps, defeat the purpas of the step goal, I walk around 12-17000 steps at work but can't have my watch on for risking braking it. But the huge number of steps is not counting in my health calculations in the connect app, so a step counter feature ore just a direct synt with Google fit would be a great move by garmin

So you cannot carry the watch, but you can carry a phone? That does not sound too credible.Carrry it in the pocket, just like the phone, if you can't have it on the writst.

Garmin employees already posted several times that Garmin will not allow any editing of daily steps, because it is bound by policies of insurance agencies who often use the step data from fitness trackers for calculating benefits in health insurance.

  • Thanks for that Trux. I knew Garmin didn't allow step editing but assumed it was just some internal policy related to data integrity. Of course, I should have guessed it came down to underwriting - everything does.

An option: Vivofit 3 or Vivofit 4.

There are optional belt clips available for them and at least the VF4 supports "TrueUp" so steps counted on that will integrate with those from another device.
