Edge 520 different calorie burn with/without heart rate monitor.

Different calorie burn reading with/without hrm. 50 mile bike read without = 2500 cals, with 1200 cals, any thoughts?

  • HR is essential in estimating calories. Without it it's just a wild guess. Hence the discrepancy.

Do not tell us that you would expect the same calorie burn regardless of heart rate, hence regardless the effort, would you really? It simply looks like the estimated HR is probably a little too high, because the difference is rather important.

  • BTW, I guess that there might be some personal parameters in User Setting like the weight, height, age, gender, and the Activity Class that might (or in fact ought to) have impact on the estimated calorie burn without HR. It would be logical that users with activity class 0 would have much higher estimated calorie burn than for example people with class 5 or 9. Hence if you never adjusted your activity class, I would advise doing so now. I do not claim I know it has really any impact on the estimate, but logically it definitely should.

  • I have the same issue - the HR monitor calorie measurement looks too low to me, and the no HR monitor looks too high

Post some data, so that we can judge

  • 375 per hr with, , 800-900 calories/ hr without hrm

  • And how are your age, gender, weight, height, and ativity class set in the User Profile? Are those values at rest, or during an Activity? If during an activity, what type of activity, what pace, and what is the HR (if measured)? What is the average Resting HR for that day? What is your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)? And where do you see those values shown in your post? Posting a screenshot demonstrating it would be more helpful.

  • yes my profile is loaded with all the data. The values are during activity - examples attached. HR is avg 127 (I vary from avg 115 to about 135). Activity is cycling at 14-18 mph - averages on examples. Avg resting HR is in the 52-58 range. No idea what my RMR is. screenshots attached. Length of ride should not matter.
