The most likely reason is that the GPS was not active because your ephemeris data file expired or is damaged. Connect the watch with USB cable to the computer, and check for updates with Garmin Express. You need doing it regularly - GPS cannot work reliably and quickly without fresh ephemeris data. I don't find the status of the epo.
So update it with Garmin Express anyway

Check the date and size fo the file //GARMIN/REMOTESW/EPO.BIN It should have the date of today, and the size of some 63kB. If it is old, delete it (keep the original somewhere), and try updating via Garmin Express again. Check the file then.
However, note that the updated epo file will have no effect on past activities. Only on the new ones you do with it.
Did you check the date of the file on the watch? Did the GPS lock the position?
