Active calories TOO high since last Saturday

Since last Saturday Garmin Connect (not sure does it relate to Android version only or Connect Web) calculate too high value for active calories.

I use 935 to track all dedicated activities (rides, runs, swims etc) and to use it as an activity tracker.

Before Saturday Active calories were quite close to sum of calories burnt during recorded activities and plus some more if I walk without recording.

But now it calculates enormous calories:

For example, today I rode 27 km on my bike with power meter and spent 568 calories. That's close to right value.

Also I had about 800 steps recorded.

But on the screen "Calories In/Out" it shows me 1242 Active calories

For me it looks like Garmin Connect Server more than doubling active calories.

I didn't change any setting in Android application, Web app or my 935. MoveIQ is switched OFF.

For me it looks like they applied some changes in their code on the server but as usual fixed one but broke other...

Now "Calories In/Out" is absolutely rubbish.

The same happened to me at around about the same time. I had a day where I only walked 1900 steps, no activity, and Garmin Connect shows me as having burnt 4700 calories! I'm using a Fenix 5, and the computer and android version of Garmin Connect, so I'm guessing that this is a wider problem than any one watch or system.

  • The terminology is a bit confusing, but the "active calories" are not the same as "activity calories". While the former are calories burned throughout the whole day excluding the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), the later are total calories burned during a logged activity including the BMR. So if you, during that given day, moved a lot, or had a high HR, it is not at all impossible that you burned 1242 active calories (calories over BMR) even if you did not log any of that moving into any activity.

  • As for the second case - burning 4700 calories during a day with just 1900 steps - that sounds indeed a bit too much. Wasn't the HR sensor giving some crazy data too?

For the 103 days before Friday 13 December, my average calories burnt was 3263, then suddenly since December 13th, its changed to 4363.

I'm assuming that there has been some sort of software update that has changed how the calculation is done, because I haven't changed my weight significantly, or my heart rate, or my activity levels, or the way I wear my watch.

Looking at the stats, it seems to be the active rather than resting calories that have increased.

  • For me, this appears to be due to the 15.10 software updated pushed to my Fenix 5.

On comparable days before and after the update, the active calories calculated is more than quadrupled (what used to be like 376 active calories is now greater than 1500).

I have contacted customer support via email, will see what they say.

  • I have had the same experience on my 935.. active calories and subsequently total calories has seen a major jump in the last 2 weeks, with all my activity being unchanged. Agree it is likely something in new software, as nothing else has changed.
