Music control problem after firmware update

Former Member

After latest update on my forerunner 245 music I could not control any music app on my phone. Previously it was working for any app that was playing music on the phone.(Spotify, Poweramp)

Currently the only app that watch wants to cooperate with is Google play Music.

Is there any chance to somehow fix this issue?

Previous firmware was 2.7 and problem popped after upgrade to 3.0

The same here with my Vivoactive 3 (SW# 6.9). Really annoying!! Used to work fine with PowerAmp on my Android phone. But stopped since 2(?) updates ago.

Now, pressing pause, forward or rewind activates Google Play on the phone. Which I do not (want to) use. Using PowerAmp on the phone connected to my watch, there is no music (track) information. The volume up and down controls do work. Mute does not.

Read a few so called 'solutions' where the watch music controls are now are supposed to control the last used music app on the phone. Tried all this, but I can confirm this certainly does not work for me. Option to select a default music app to control in the Connect app has also dissapeared for some time now.

    @Garmin: Please get this fixed!!

I contacted several times Garmin Support via email and the reason of abovementioned problem was the firmware of the phone. After newest update of my Android phone (Xiaomi Mi Note 3) all is working without problems. I believe all you need is to wait for your phone firmware to be updated and hope that it will be done ASAP.

Thanks for your reply Bart. I had not looked at this issue from the perspective that the phone could be causing the trouble. Coincidentally I too own a Xiaomi (Pocophone F1).

But still, I do recall the functioning of the music controls to have stopped right after a software update of my watch. Having seen the blue triangle appear on the watch after an update. And I do not recall having updated the phone in the same period. As mentioned in my first reply, the Connect app has also been changed,.

So depending on how you look at it, Garmin updated/changed the software, and now Xiaomi has to fix it/update the phone....?

@ Garmin: If I am wrong, I will be the first to admit it and apologise. Otherwise: please fix it.

  • Did you find any solution yet?

Nope. The phone has now had a MUI update (no Android update yet). There have also been several Connect app updates. The issues I have with the music control have changed but have not been fixed. Touching the controls does Nothing on the phone. Does not even start Google Play. Only the volume controls function. But then Mute does not.

    Perhaps this can help?

The most annoying part is that when some default settings interfere with the functioning of apps you won't even know - there's no notification telling you to switch settings or anything like that, you just have to start digging yourself. This has happened to us with the Garmin Connect app - the one you use to sync the company's smartwatches to your phone. It simply refused to take us past the login screen until we went into the Settings and enabled every single permission (which aren't even all in the same subcategory), then switched to "No restrictions" for the built-in battery saver, and finally turned Autostart on.

  • I had this problem with my Fenix 5x and was able to fix it...for now anyway. Here's what I did:

Uninstall Garmin connect from phone. Remove watch from bluetooth. Restart phone.

Install Garmin connect, making sure you give all of the permissions. I did sign in with my original password, no change there.

It's a bit of a pain, but it has worked. No harm in trying it just takes a little time. Hope it works for you too!

In my case, all I did was give it all permissions (enable notifications that I had disabled earlier) and force close the app and start it again. It worked like charm for me.
