The most likely reason is that the GPS was not active because your ephemeris data file expired or is damaged. Connect the watch with USB cable to the computer, and check for updates with Garmin Express. You need doing it regularly - GPS cannot work reliably and quickly without fresh ephemeris data. Thanks for that, trux I'm using Garmin Connect app to sync and update my watch. Do I need to use the USB then?
I'm also intrigued on why this doesn't happen automatically? When I select an activity to do, my watch takes a few seconds to find GPS position and goes through Red -> Organge -> Green circle on outside of the screen to show progress of GPS location. I always assumed once it's green and ready I'm good to go. Is that not the case?
