Nuclear option: borrow or buy an ANT+ stick to connect the Vivofit to Garmin Express on a desktop computer. Run any firmware updates on that before attempting to connect to a mobile device via Bluetooth.
In case you weren't aware, you don't pair via Bluetooth pairing as you would headphones - it has to be done in the Garmin Connect mobile app.
