Garmin Connect causing Bluetooth instability with Android auto

Over the last month I have been experiencing issues with the Bluetooth connections for multiple devices. When in my car, my phone disconnects and will reconnect multiple times even on a short 10-15 minute drive. This also has been happening with my Bluetooth earbuds with random disconnects and quick reconnects. This was a daily occurrence and made using any Bluetooth functions in my car for calling or Android Auto almost impossible due to the Bluetooth always disconnecting.

I started troubleshooting software and once I uninstalled Garmin Connect my Bluetooth connections immediately became stable. It had been a week and I have yet to experience a single Bluetooth disconnect. This afternoon I reinstalled Garmin Connect and my Bluetooth connection started acting up again.

Watch is a Fenix 5X Plus, phone is a Samsung 9S+ and I am up to date on software for both OS and Garmin Connect. I drive a 2017 Ford Edge with the Sync3 and Android Auto activated on my head unit.

Has anyone else experience this and if so do you have a solution? I like not having to sync my watch manually daily on my PC, but the annoyance of an unstable Android Auto and the headphone disconnects make having Garmin Connect on my phone untenable.

I can confirm the same issue with Fenix 5X, Pixel 3 XL and Sennheiser PXC 550.

Unfortunately I don't have a solution, just a work around of turning watch BT off while I listen to music as all notifications come through the headphones, then sync watch with app once done with headphones

  • I stumbled upon this thread because I have similar issues. I've owned many Garmin BLE watches and cycling head units over the years and my issue did not start until the purchase of my most recent watch - Garmin Venu 2 Plus. As @K2Climber says, I also realized that disconnecting my watch from the phone resolves the issue. For the time being my method when jumping in the car is to pull up my quick launch menu on the watch and disconnect the phone. Doing this allows my Samsung Galaxy phone to immediately connect to Android Auto. Interestingly I have had a Fenix 5x Plus for about 2 years and it never caused these issues with my Android Auto head unit and phone. My problem only started with the Venu 2 Plus watch I got about a week ago. Did either of you guys ever find a better solution to the issue?
