Pause it after every shot? That's a pain. It should have a feature that allows you to select walk or cart before the start of the round. Cant imagine it would be that difficult for garmin to build that…
I agree Garmin should add features of travel on the golf course. I recently bought the Venu 4 for golf and would like it to correctly measure my steps as I push my battery powered cart.
Is this when using the golf app on a wearable device?
I just purchased the fenix 6 and used the golf feature on my watch for the first time. Came across the same issue. Weird part is the watch seems to accurately reflect my steps and calories burned for the day but when you look at activity done it shows I walked 16 mlles ( played 2 rounds) and climbed 75 floors ( small mountains/big hills in AZ). Definitely drove 16 miles in the cart but again my steps seem to be correct (14,000)

It is just a single press of a button. You won't even notice it, once you start doing it. I don't have a better solution for you, and am not sure whether anyone else here on the user forum has one. If you prefer going on with it in the current way, waiting for Garmin to make a change, just do.

Probably not. You can try suggesting it to them: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/
However, I am afraid it will bring them even more complaints from people who walk considerable distances from and to their carts, or who do not use one all the time. Better than that would be an automated detection of the ride, but again - there would be a number of problems, including the handling of false detections, errors caused by the delays during the transition, etc. Still, I find that pressing the pause/resume button is the simplest and the most reliable solutiion.
that is the weird part though. the watch can tell if i'm walking as the steps are correct but the golf activity thinks all distance traveled is walking when it's not. should be a simple calc edit on their part. distance = steps. not total distance traveled. same goes for floors. thanks for the link. i'll submit a request. doubt it will be addressed but you never know
The whole golfing activity needs some work. I walk and carry clubs. Some people are in a cart, but still doing substantial walking. others have a battery operated push cart. Somewhere you should be able to enter a default for what kind of activity golf should be.

Keep the arm freely moving while walking (hold the cart with the other hand). Or keep the watch in the pocket. The watch has no chance detecting your steps, if you keep it on the wrist of the hand resting on the cart's handlebar.
I dont know but this might help you
