"No device paired" in Connect - what gives?

Recently I had to do factory reset on my smartphone (Sony Xperia XZ Premium, Android 9). After that I reinstalled Garmin Connect and logged in into my account - no problems here.

Then I tried to pair my Edge 510 with my phone (and Garmin Connect app). I've done this before many times. Went through the normal procedure: in Connect app went to "Devices", found Edge 510, clicked "Add Device". The app asked me to go through the usual Bluetooth pairing procedure in smartphone's BT settings. I did everything without any problems: Edge 510 paired with the phone and then successfully connected to the phone over BT. Everything looked fine.

However, after that procedure, in "Devices" section of Garmin Connect app on my phone I still see "No devices paired". Why?

Meanwhile, the Edge 510 remains paired with the phone and keeps connecting to the phone over BT without any problems. Yet automatic ride upload never happens. Manual ride upload works, but with quirks: the first request to upload a ride always fails, all subsequent requests complete successfully.

So, the pairing worked fine and the BT connection works fine too. Rides do upload successfully (manually). But Garmin Connect app still says "No devices paired" and I still have no automatic uploads.

What happened? How do I troubleshoot this?

Removing and reinstalling the app, clearing data, asking the phone to forget the Edge and re-pairing from scratch does not help. All these procedures perform successful pairing between the phone and the Edge, but the app still says "No device paired".
