FR735XT does not reconnect any more

Forerunner 735XT and Garmin Mobile Android on a Samsung Galaxy A3 2017.
Everything worked fine until last Wednesday (March 13, 2019).

For the last two days my watch does not reconnect to the phone anymore, when a connection is temporarily lost for some reason (like walking out of the room). To reconnect I have to do some magic which involves:
* opening the Connect app
* turning location on/off
* turning internet connection on/off
I'm not sure which one does the trick, but when I fiddle with the above for some time the watch reconnects eventually.

Also please note, that once connected, the connection remains stable no matter if the app is open or not, or if the phone is connected to internet or not, or if location is turned on or off.
I do not recall making any changes and/or updates to my setup in the last 2 days, and yet the problem started yesterday.
  • On Saturday the Garmin Connect app got updated, and everything is back to normal.
  • And the problem is back :(

    For the last couple of days, the watch does not reconnect automatically. In order to reconnect, I have to do the following:
    1. Turn on internet connection on the phone.
    2. Turn on location on the phone.
    3. Open the Garmin Connect app.
    I can now confirm that ALL of the above are necessary for regaining connection. Failing to do one of them prevents the watch from reconnecting.
    Once the connection is established, I can turn all of the above off, and the connection remains stable, notifications work, and so on. Until I go out of range and the watch looses connection and I have to repeat 1-3 again.

    The thing is that for the last couple of weeks I did not change anything in my configuration, i.e. the watch runs the same firmware (9.40), I have the same phone, there was no Garmin Connect update in the last couple of weeks, and yet until about a week ago none of the above was necessary to regain connection, but for some reason is now obligatory. Does anyone have any idea what's going on?
