GCM stopped working, device not paired

My GCM stopped working today. I have two Android phones, one running Pie, the other one Oreo. I have GCM installed on both and they both worked just fine, syncing via bluetooth with my Edge 810. When I tried to sync my Edge 810 today after a bike ride, the device just disappeared from GCM on both phones. I have since then tried to uninstall and reinstall GCM on both phones (deleting data in the phones' BT storage, flushing the cache, unpairing and re-pairing the Edge with both phones etc.), but it just won't work. When I set up the GCM app, I go through the pairing process with the Edge 810, but then the device still does not show up under my Garmin devices in the menu, so I've gone through successive rounds of setups multiple times, with the same failure. Is something wrong with the GCM app? It cannot be the phone, since I have the same problem with 2 different phones, running different versions of Android. This is a massive disappointment, especially as I just switched to Android from Windows mobile a couple of weeks ago because Windows did not support the GCM app any more.
