Testing and Questions on Huawei Incompatibility

Hello Everyone,

So i recently bought my self a vivoactive 3. For about a week i was using it with my old samsung J5 (android 6) and everything was nice and smooth.
Now end of the year I bought a Huawei P20 Lite (ouch.. I wish I Knew earlier) with android 8,
It does connect, pair, synchronize but...It will not maintain a connection if I stop the application from running

I removed it from battery optimization and I also have it to be handled manually (first launch second launch and maintain in back ground)

The above configuration will improve the situation a little bit but still, wont hold for long:

After a bit of research I found out about the "update connection" setting. Now what I find peculiar about this is the below cases:

case A) If i long press the device (on android app) and select "update connection" from within the application, then if I stop the application individually it will lost connection but after 2-3 seconds will come back which is great, but if I click the bin and kill all apps then it will never can back

case B) Instead of doing "Update connection" from within the garmin connect, I can close the app, let the phone disconnect and then go from bluetooth settings and re-pair the device which will essentially do the same. In case I do that then if I close individually the application it will never revive the connection but if I close all, it will drop connection and revive in matter of 2-3 seconds

case B) Lets assume that one of the above cases was successfully implemented and the service was working and running fine pushing the notifications. If the Garmin app is not running in the front but I only have the service in the background , the next time I select the bin will still kill other phone apps will also kill the background service.

case D) If I have the watch in an updated connection, the next time I start the app it seems that this setting is forgotten and need to re-do in order to apply.

Now I am a professional high qualified tester for hardware and software and I have bothered garming support quite a bit, but they don't seem to think that this is going to be fixed. What they told me is that they did the best they can but it doesn't seem it can be fixed further

I understand that there is some-kind of a problem/incompatibility with huawei, but my questions are:

a) Based on my above test flows is seems there is a way to keep the service running whether you individually kill the app or all together. Why can I not have both at same time?
b) why can it not maintain the update connection setting, or why cant they not do it automatically every time I start the app
c) How is huawei treating the services of huawei health. Since they produce fitness-smartwatches themselves, there has to be a way to make this work unless huawei is shooting their own feet
d) Applications like gmail, whatsapp etc. etc. seems to be alright running their services in the background. Why is so hard for garmin to do so?

It is so frustrating the fact that I buy a watch to not miss a nottification and throughout the day I have to be constantly stressed whether it is connected on the phone. It is kind of missing the point of having a smart watch - fitness watch because I couldve gonne for a vivosport which is only a fitness band.

Any one who managed to have that working with any way I will be happy to listen I find it very weird that garmin hasn't been able to fix this very important issue and they claim that this is as far as they can go which I do not believe it is the case.

  • Use the lock-feature in the task manager, like it is described in every Huawei or Android 9 Thread.

On Android 8 it is in the upper right corner of the app-screen within the task´s view. On Android 9 you have to swipe the app downwards.

  • It is true Problem is, that does not keep it open from trying to close it individually, Sometimes in the rush i may swipe it to close and locking it doesn't do anything.
  • Okay, if you close it on purpose, off course it overrides your lock-setting.
I´d expect it exactly to do so.

Just tap on the recycle bin icon to close all apps, then it will still run in the background and work as desired.
