New Vivoactive 3 Music will not maintain connection to Connect Android app

Per the title. I've a new Vivoactive 3 Music (VA3M), which I initially managed to pair to the Connect Android app and sync an activity, but I cannot get it to ever connect again.

Having got the VA3M only today, this is all a bit frustrating!

I've tried doing all the sensible things I can think of, such as:
- reset the VA3M wiping all data and pair again from scratch
- delete/reinstall the Connect app
- forget the phone's BT VA3M pairing
- disabling battery optimisation for the Connect app
- enabling the Connect app's " Device Connection Aid" setting.

Nothing has worked. Without the VA3M being able to maintain a connection to Connect, the device is essentially useless.

Anyone have any suggestions?

NB Phone is Moto X Play on Android 7.1.1; BLE works fine with other devices
VA3M is stuck on firmware 3.10 as I cannot update it without being able to maintain a connection to the Connect app...
