Upload data to Garmin - or not?

What happens if I decide to not upload my data to Garmin? Will I lose everything, history and all, or will everything automatically there after be saved on my android device?
  • Your android device does not store anything locally, except perhaps some limited cache of recent data to improve performane. The mobile app shows data from the Garmin Connect cloud.
  • I think you misunderstood my question. There is an option in the Garmin app to turn off uploading data to the Garmin online service. This is where everything is stored by default. But if I decide to turn this function off -will my data thereafter be stored locally on my device?
  • The description for that option says that if you revoke the consent to upload data to Garmin Connect, then the only functions left will be handling device settings and receiving notifications. Anything else will require consent to upload. So, no, fitness data will not be stored locally.
  • All data from activities is kept on your device forever (or until full), fitness tracking (steps, sleep) for a few days, and avanced sleep tracking data for 24 hours. So if you revoke consent and copy all data from the device via USB every day you won't lose anything. NB it is hard to analyse the fitness and sleep tracking data without using Connect. If anyone knows of ready to use offline software to do that, please share!
  • An added functionality would be to have the option to locally store all your content (in your phone).
There are occasions that I do not have access to a network (cellular of wifi) and garmin connect is useless. This should not happen, the data should be mirrored.
  • emakrinos I too would like that but it seems to be the way of most things to rely on 24/7 connection to the web. There is an app called sporttablet which I used to use to download files from my watch to the phone and store them - it provides limited functionality however but it may have been upgraded since I last used it
  • This should not happen, the data should be mirrored.

There is no ‘should’. Is there a law, or set of government regulations, or a recognised technical or industry standard requiring it? Is it necessary for Garmin to offer it in order to achieve its corporate/business objectives?

What you want and what you think (or feel) is ideal is not a valid basis of ‘should’ in any discussion or determination.
