Android GCM crashes after Fenix 5X sync

I bought a Fenix 5X at the weekend, and paired it to GCM on my phone with no problems. It did an initial sync, was picking up my step and HR data, etc.

The next morning, I did another sync, and after the sync had completed, GCM closed completely. Restarting it did the same thing. Clearing the cache and data enabled me to pair them again, but GCM would still crash after the sync. I connected the watch to my PC and installed the v10 firmware, uninstalled and reinstalled GCM on my phone, but it still just crashes within a couple of seconds of opening.

Edited to add: Have been using a 910XT and Vivoactive with this phone and GCM with no crashing, this was a new problem once the Fenix started syncing. It crashes whether or not bluetooth is on, so it's not something in the active connection to the watch, it seems to be something with data which has already gone to the GCM app.

This phone / GCM have been fine so far with my 910xt and Vivoactive - both of which I've been using with this phone since I got it ~18 months ago, the problem only manifested when syncing with the Fenix. Even with the phone bluetooth turned off, GCM will crash, which would seem to indicate a problem with data the Fenix has already sent to the app, rather than anything happening with an active connection.
  • If you cleared the cache and data and still have an issue, it's hard to see how data sent by the Fenix would affect the app.

It's a shot in the dark but I presume you have an activity on the watch that you're trying to get into Connect. Try importing the activity manually from web Connect's activities list and see if it's successful. If it is, delete it from the watch.

The other option is to delete the cache and data again on the phone, uninstall, and reinstall Connect.

Thanks pshare - If I cleared the cache and data (and / or reinstalled), the problem wouldn't manifest again until the Fenix had been reconnected and synced. Clearly something was coming across during the sync which was successfully transferred, but which was choking GCM somehow, as it would crash whether or not it was able to connect to the Fenix.

Anyway, I did an activity last night, uploaded via wifi, and GCM seems to have been perfectly happy since. Fingers crossed...
