Still would like to have an export function to be able to view an activity within a useful map (the embedded map doesn't show smaller foot paths, etc.)
To use the Garmin Connect via the Web browser needs to store all data in the Garmin cloud, not everony wants that.

If you connected the watch to the phone through Garmin Connect Mobile, then the data is already on the cloud. Garmin Connect Mobile and Garmin Connect Web are just two different interfaces to your Garmin Connect account, both pointing to the very same data on the cloud.
In other words, as long as you use Garmin Connect Mobile for syncing your watch, you can export your activities from Garmin Connect Web, without the need of uploading the activity to the web again. It is already there.
If yo do not want to use the cloud at all for the data storage, you have to disable it in your privacy setting, or stop using Garmin Connect Mobile entirely, In that case you can use third party tools to read the FIT files from the watch, like for example the Golden Cheetah. There are also numerous applications and websites, working with the FIT files, importing them or converting them to GPX. For example the plotaroute.com can do it, but there are certainly others too.
Hm, thanks for the clarification - I've all my data (including activities) on my mobile app of Garmin Connect but when I login to Garmin Connect using my web browser there is no single activity - I did a logoff/login already, accepted Garmin's data storage rules on the browser but nothing has changed. So there seems to be an issue with my account which blocks this workaround (at least at the moment)...
The other point is how to access the FIT files in general (at home and when beeing away from home). My older watches (FR935, etc.) could be connect to any PC, notebook, tablet and I had access to the device files then - my new FR955 has an option "Garmin USB mode" but this mode doesn't work, only MTP is done which makes everything more complicate (and slow). One example: when connecting my older FR935 for recharging, a background tool starts doing some things (a backup of all new FIT files is done, the files are converted to GPX and are added to a database for analysis and the EPO file on the watch is updated as well).
The FR955 fails to do that, so I need to find a workaround for that. It the Garmin USB mode will be fixed for the FR955, that would be perfect - but it would be a great help to export a selected activity to a FIT (or GPX or whatever) file directly on the phone.

No, you do not have. All data is stored on Garmin's servers (on the cloud, if you want to call it so). No data is kept on the phone (except of the small temporary cache).
but when I login to Garmin Connect using my web browser there is no single activity
You have to log in with the same credential as you used for the app. If there is no activity on GC Web, then you are not in the same account.

You can access the files in the same way even with the most modern devices. Make sure the USB is in the Mass Storage mode (should be actually default, I believe). You can also use Garmin Express to update the EPO / CPE file, to sync, etc. If you use another tool with your FR935, then it will very likely work with FR955 too.
Activities: Are you sure that you use the same account? As trux wrote app and web-version are just a different interface to the same data.
FIT-Files: Only very old watches like the Fenix 1 were connected as a USB-drive. This made it possible to connect the watch via USB-OTG to a phone or tablet. My Fenix 3 already connected as a media player (MTP). AFAIK there ist no way to connect it to a phone/tabled anymore but on a Windows-PC this does not make a big difference (I think on a Mac you have to install something). Transferring fit-files, music, maps etc. is quite fast and works in both directions.
The standard software which syncs your watch on a PC or MAC is Garmin Express. It should work with old and new watches. If you have issues, check for updates.
If you use something different for the backup of your activities, it might be helpful for others if you name us the software! In this case check if the software supports the FR955.
I use the web-version of Garmin Connect to export fit-files and then import them to the web-version of Strava. Both platforms do not support upload or download from their smartphone apps and I do not want an automatic sync of every activity.
Thanks for all comments, they do help - and please keep your mildness even I'm unprecise from time to time
"I have all my data" is not correct, I meant "I see all my data on the display", sorry...
...I've checked multiple times if the account is different - and it was, even it hasn't been seen in the app. Because it doesn't show the correct account which is used by the app but shows a web page displaying the cached account of the browser (not sure if this is absolute exact but that's how it looks for me)
So, thanks to Rrux, Ramon and RunR - I am succesfully logged in, see my data and so exporting can be done.
Concering the USB thing - default has been "TPM mode" (FW10.10) on the FR955, I've changed it to "Garmin mode" which should be identical to "Mass storage". FW The latest FW (12.12) didn't change anything here and also the behaviour is identical:
TPM mode - the (Windows) PC shows the Forerunner after a while (which is a longer while on some PC's) and it needs also some seconds untill the directories are seen, etc. No wonder, MTP is a slow protocol mechanism.
Garmin mode - the watch displays a message if MTP should be used imediately after being connected to the PC. Accepting this will do the same as written above, Aborting the dialog does nothing (means, the watch and the PC aren't connected then)
Garmin Express - never needed that before , but I've installed it now (and I'll need some moments to understand its logic - it asks me everytime to update the same ski map, show each installed widget (glance) as a seperate app) - what I see for the moment, file transfer is still slow (no wonder, MTP again) and I need to disconnect and reconnect the watch just for installing an app, updating a map and so on. - Why this software is called "Express" ;-)
BTW you'll find the backup program (Foxrunner) here (Windows only, works fine until the FR935 at least).
Actually I've updated some development tools to work with my new FR955 Screeny is a (nearly) all-in-one IDE which only needs java and Garmin's IQ SDK to create apps, ScreenyFont is an editor to modify custom fonts.
