Connect for Mobile (Android) will not connect via bluetooth to Fenix and 810

I have recorded activity on both and Edge 810 and fenix (1 - the original). Taking the fenix as an example, normally I would activate the Bluetooth on the watch and open the app and after a few mins, all will be synced. Activity appears on the Connect site and then syncs to Strava.

Now, it fails every time. I have tried turning both devices (phone and watch) on and off, un-syncing the bluetooth connection and re-connecting, turning bluetooth on and off, re-installing the connect for mobile app and am stuck.

Checking the bluetooth connections on the phone, the fenix is a know connection and shows connected, but the bluetooth icon flashes on the watch like it's searching for a connection. I cleared the device from the app and then go to connect it again and it finds it, but when setting up, times out while connecting to device. It's always been a bit haphazard, but this is a new level of low. Help, please. I'd like to not have to carry a cable and laptop about everywhere in 2018... Or how about just allowing me to link to Strava direct, like other manufacturers...
  • Just connected original Fenix to Android (7) as follows: In phone Bluetooth settings for the Fenix: "Forget device". Then on Fenix: setup -> Bluetooth -> Pair. In the phone Bluetooth settings: pair Fenix. Then open Connect Mobile and add the Fenix. It is different than before where you should not try to pair a Garmin device to a phone from the phone's Bluetooth settings.

BTW if it doesn't work at all with Bluetooth and you need the files but have no laptop, you can connect the Fenix to the phone with a USB OTG adapter via a *powered* USB hub, to retrieve the FIT and/or GPX files. Always use a powered hub - the Fenix will try to charge via USB and then power levels on the bus can become too low, which can ruin the filesystem on the Fenix. Safe-remove the Fenix before disconnecting it from the phone.
