A total newbie with GCM and vivoactive 3 problems

I have Vivoactive 3 running SW Version 3.50, GPS Version 4.40; mobile is Moto G5 running Android 7.0, GCM 4.6.4.

Sorry about these apparently total newbie questions but I'm getting increasingly frustrated with my Vivoactive 3, a device that I really do like, but...

Up to a week or two ago the v3 sync'd ok with GCM on the Moto, just occasional issues.

Recently I'm finding that viewing the My Day display, which is set to show Steps, Floors, etc; I then tap through the Steps count to the Step Details (or Floors) screen. Previously that was updated from the My Day screen. For the past week or so it no longer updates after syncs, saying No Data Available.

If I connect the V3 to my PC and start Garmin Express and let it sync to GE the Step Details screen and the Floors screen immediately update. It the moment that seems to be the only way of ensuring that the daily stats are recorded for history purposes. I'd guess that if I didn't do the GE sync at the end of the day that day's stats would be lost the following day.

And today tapping the blue sync icon on GCM My Day results in the sync progress clock going to about the 3 o'clock or occasionally the 8 o'clock position then stopping. And the Step Details screen tells me to sync to see the latest stats. If only I could! I've down a hard power down (15 seconds button) of the V3 - no difference.

What I'm unclear about is how much of the information is direct from watch to GCM or how much is essentially via Garmin's servers. In which case what happens when out of mobile or WiFi coverage?
  • If you sync and you're on My Day, it gets refreshed automatically. The other pages don't at that time. To update the other pages, just pull down on the display and it should get refreshed.

As for the sync process, each milestone means something. The first part is the connection to the watch. Eight o'clock means that whatever needs to be transferred to the watch is now in GCM and ready to transfer over the internet. Beyond the 8 o'clock position, it is communicating over the internet.

Thank you for the reply, apologies for the delay in responding, I've been up to my eyeballs for a few days.

No matter what I did I couldn't get the Step Details to update except by connecting the V3 to my PC and sync'ing in Garmin Express. Not a satisfactory state of affairs. I also found that when using the Walk app and GPS to track a walk it started up OK but refused to clock any steps or distance, only time.

Eventually this morning I was able to spend an hour or so trying various things.

In the end I took the plunge and did a factory reset. And then had to apply all my personalisations :(

I had some difficulty re-pairing the V3, in the end I rebooted the V3 and my phone and got them re-paired. After that it all started working and has continued to do so all day. So, fingers crossed, it's now sorted.

It looks as if the V3 and/or GCM were suffering from what I call TKS[SUP]1[/SUP], a malady that seems all too common with some modern technology.

    [SUP]1[/SUP] TKS - twisted knicker syndrome ;)
  • As long as you don't get your knickers in a knot.
