Step goal should be changed

Hi,

I have discovered that the daily step goal is being selected out from yesterdays step count.

This is annoying because if i have a daily average of 6000 step and I on a special occasion Walk 9000 step then the step goal of tomorrow would be set out from the special occasion count of 9000. So it will be something like 9400 maybe.

This is big failure and demotivating because next Day goals is by over 50% of my average step count.

I hope next Day step goal will be set out from all time average. And maybe 100 step raise at a time.

Sincerely Ahmed / Denmark.
  • What you describe is not the normal behaviour in Garmin Connect.

Normally, if you exceed your step goal for today, your goal for tomorrow will be slightly higher than the goal for today.

What was your daily steps and your daily step goal for the 5 days before? You can see both in Garmin Connect on the PC (and perhaps also in Garmin Connect for Android - I have never used it).

If it is a new watch or Garmin account, I suspect that you are actually seeing the opposite of what you think: That your goal is currently being adjusted a bit down every day from the default 10000 steps/day.
  • The goal is adjusted by 2.5% of the difference between yesterday's goal and yesterday's actual. So if you exceed your goal by 3,000 steps, your goal will increase by 75 steps. Similarly, if you miss by 3,000 steps, it will be reduced by 75 steps. While autogoal is aq great motivator when you first start working out, after awhile I just set a fixed goal.
  • The goal is adjusted by 2.5% of the difference between yesterday's goal and yesterday's actual.
Not exactly, but close enough I suppose.

Well, i just checked all goals back to the Day i startede using it. The biggest difference that i found is +2000 step.

    My Goal April 6 is 5200 - I Walked 16134
    My Goal April 7 is 7200 - I Walked 4527

    Difference is + 2000 step.
  • First of all, this is probably controlled by the watch, not by Garmin Connect. Otherwise you would need to synchronize to get new goals, and that would not be practical. So the logic is probably different in different watch models.

I have looked at the data from my Fenix 3, and it seems to go like this:
    • If your steps met today's goal:
      • If today's goal is less than 7500 steps:
        • Tomorrow's goal = Today's goal + Today's goal * 6%

      • If today's goal is between 7500 and 10000 steps:
        • Tomorrow's goal = Today's goal + MAX(Today's goal * 4% ; (Today's steps - Today's goal) * 20%)

      • If today's goal is more than 10000 steps:
        • Tomorrow's goal = Today's goal + MAX(Today's goal * 2% ; (Today's steps - Today's goal) * 5%)

    • If your steps failed to meet today's goal, but you did meet your goal yesterday:
      • Tomorrow's goal = Today's goal - (Today's goal - Today's steps) * 5%

    • If your steps failed to meet today's goal, and you didn't meet your goal yesterday either:
      • If today's goal is less than 7500 steps:
        • Tomorrow's goal = Today's goal - Today's goal * 5%

      • If today's goal is between 7500 and 10000 steps:
        • Tomorrow's goal = Today's goal - Today's goal * 7.5%

      • If today's goal is more than 10000 steps:
        • Tomorrow's goal = Today's goal - Today's goal * 2.5%

The last one looks strange, with percentages going up and down. I only have a few of these "negative goal strikes", so there may be something more going on, which I don't have enough data to figure out.

My goal have only been barely below 5000 and barely above 11000. So outside this range there may be more going on too.
  • It takes me about 9 minutes to do 1000 steps so an extra 2k would just be achievable by doing a 20 minute walk. By forcing myself to not make excuses like it's not nice out/I don't feel like it after 259 days hitting target it was up to nearly 20K - I have since fixed it to 15K as that allows me to hit target if been stuck in meetings etc. and not got much done at work.
  • Or set the step goal manually instead of letting the watch automatically adjust it. That way, it will stay at 6000 even if you do 9000 steps walks now and then.

I didn't know that the Goal can be set manually, just find it out it can. Well, this fix my problem.
  • Auto-goal is very useful when you are first starting out as it gets you moving, helps you do more and gives you a good idea of what you can do. However, after some time, a fixed goal probably makes more sense as autogoal can grow to be overly consuming of time and effort.

Only if reaching the step goal day after day is actually considered important by the user. I have had several instances when my step count at 11:30PM fell just a few steps short of the (auto) goal for the day, and the goal could be reached by just walking to my kitchen and grabbing a glass of water, but the ‘discipline’ of not being swayed by such considerations is at least equally as important – if not more so – than the ‘discipline’ of doing whatever a gadget tells me to or suggests that I do. There are other days when my step count was zero, because I just didn't feel like wearing the watch. Achieving a long, unbroken step ‘goal streak’ is not in itself a goal for some users.
