Why can't at least recent data be kept on the phone in case the internet goes out for some reason?
Recent data is on the watch, so you can check it there. You can also use the Garmin Explore app - it does use local storage for the activites, courses, and some other data.
It's really bad. You'd think they'd learn from last year's hack to actually do local caching so that the app is usable when there are outages on the site OR when you're out of range in your OUTDOOR activity but they refuse to keep a local cache which would have actually prevented that problem last year!
oh, i am new to garmin and did not hear about that. yeah, that makes sense. i'm kinda shocked they dont have ANY local cache, at least one day's worth in case something happens or like you said, in case you are running out in the woods and lose internet. i mean, people go out of range all the time and then they cant see recent data in connect? using the watch to see data is annoying.
i cant use the garmin explorer app because i have a venu sq. i am use to the connect app for this and then when there is no internet i cant use it. wouldnt it be simple to just cache data in the connect app?
i have been using a garmin watch for about a week now and i keep finding bugs and really strange design choices and it is making me think garmin needs to invest more in software and not just in hardware which IS really good. software is also very very important!
It's probably not what you want, but assuming the Venu sq has USB data transfer capabilities, you could use a laptop and an offline program like GoldenCheetah to view your activities.
A long time ago (~5 years) there were apps for Android that could display .FIT files (the files that the activities are stored in), so with a USB OTG cable you could copy the FIT files to a phone and view them there.
