Google Play Services breaks syncing with Garmin Connect Android

All too often, my Huawei P10 Lite (Android Nougat) stops syncing with my Garmin Forerunner 235. When trying to pair the watch, Garmin Connect instantly finds the watch, but then times out again and again when trying to connect to it.

This happens all too often!

The only solution for me is always toremove updates for Google Play Services. Uninstalling Google Play Services and reinstalling should do the same thing.

This step, and only this step, will get my Forerunner 235 syncing with my Huawei P10 Lite again. However, then I get sign-in problems with the Play Store, which I eventually can resolve.

But the syncing problem will return at a later date most likely!

Garmin please fix this.

It seems like this mainly affects Huawei phones?

You will most likely need to update Google Play Services afterwards.

You might need to search for Google Play Services using a browser, as searching the Play Store didn't find it for me. Then choose to open it with the Play Store app...

Hi,

I have a huawei p9 lite and fenix3. I find the solution from this forum and I got the connection stable.
1. Wireless on. Bluetooth on. Data on. GPS on on your phone.
2. Open the Garmin apps, find your device.
3. Before add the device, switch off wireless, data and GPS. Just leave Bluetooth on.
4. Add your Garmin device and you will find it appear the Bluetooth pin.
5. Turn on your GPS, data ASAP.
6. Then you can paired them(should be).
Otherwise delete the apps from your phone and restarted it then restarted it again as well as your Garmin device.

The above is my experience and hope it can help the huawei users.

grolschie is true, pairing seems to be Google Play Services problem.
I found this solution working for me on Huawei P10 Lite (Android 7.0), Forerunner 235 firmware 7.52beta and Garmin Connect 4.2:
- Remove updates for Google Play Services - Settings/Apps/More/Show system processes - find Google Play Services and click top right "Uninstall updates". This will temporarily disable google services. Clear all data of google play services and Force stop google play services to be sure to restart it.
- Pair Forerunner with your phone using Garmin Connect - normal way, this should work now.
- Reboot phone, Forerunner should connect to phone now automaticallly (as normal).
- After reboot, Google Play Services should ask for update, DO IT.
- Open again settings for Google Play Services and edit Permissions - disable "Body Sensors" permission.
- Now all should work.
- Maybe good to restart phone and forerunner.
- Sometimes disconnect, then you need to "Force Stop" Google Play Services, but then it restarts automatically soon and works well.
(Maybe some more restarts during this process necessary)

This has been a very informative thread. I also have a P9 Lite and since October 2017 I have been unable to connect. I have contacted both Garmin and Huawei support with little resolution.
I have tried to uninstall playstore updates but the fr35 just times out.

My response from Garmin;

Dear Customer,

According to our records you’ve contacted us regarding connectivity issues with your Huawei phone and Garmin device. Please know that this is a very high priority issue for us and that we have escalated this issue to Huawei Engineering. We’ve recently been pleased to hear that their team has identified the solution to the problem but that it will require an update to your Huawei phone. We have requested an expedited release of this fix, but unfortunately at this time do not have a commitment from Huawei as to when this fix will become available.

We’ll be sure to keep you informed as soon as any additional progress is made on this issue.

My response from Huawei;

Thank you for contacting Huawei.

In response to your query, please be informed that the compatibility issue between our devices and any other accessories/apps available on the market does not represent a fault of the device.

As manufacturers, we can only ensure full compatibility between our devices, programs and apps.

In order to work with a wide rage of operating systems, as intended, it's the software of the accessories that needs to be tested and updated accordingly, not the other way around.

The current incompatibility issue leads us to believe the software used on Garmin products is not developed in accord with our emotion user interface (EMUI).

As a consumer I am left at the mercy of these corporate giants. My fr235 conects to my HTC M7 & M8 without issues.
I was unable to find the link for the GC beta link if someone would be kind enough to post it again.

Im suffering through the same since September 2017, and the following is the correspondence I have had:

My Garmin watch lost it's Bluetooth connection with my Huawei P9 Lite over a month the ago and has not been able to since then. The connection had issues staying connected all the time but now it just doesn't connect. My Huawei P9 Lite easily connects to my daughters Samsung watch and the Garmin easily connects with her iPhone 5. I know that your website states that Garmin is aware of the problem with Huawei phones but I would like to inquire if it will be resolved and the expected timeline. Thank you for your time and I'd like to be a loyal customer as you have a great product but I need your help in getting there.

Their response was as follows on December 14, 2017:

We do hope that the issue with Huawei’s Bluetooth capabilities will be resolved soon, but we have no way of knowing how or when it will happen. Given that our devices are pairing just fine with all other makes of Android phones and having issues with these, you might be better served asking Huawei for a timeline. Otherwise, our engineers are investigating if it is something that they can work around as fast as they can, and we apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for choosing Garmin.

It seems that Garmin is at fault for the following reasons:
1. Huawei works well with several other bluetooth devices
2. Garmin cant ask us to get Huawei to fix the problem because Huawei has already given their requirement to developers
3. A phone is a more important device than a watch to most users
4. It seems from the quality of Garmins website and customer service that they are a non dynamic company.

For now I have accepted my $180 loss. But I will try my level best to know all potential customers of Garmin to watch out for these negatives.

Its been 5 months since the Garmin update messed things up and they have the nerve to say contact Huawei!

God help us.

Worked but notifications havent turned on. Is that because of body sensors?

Bloody Bad Luck!

Today, I updated my garmin app and tried to reconnect and voila! it connected...After 5 months my vivosmart hr+ connected to my huawei.

But then while setting it up, I stupidly checked the bluetooth in my phone settings and I lost the connection again.

I tired everything all over again and again but not luck.

I am now certain that the problem lies with Garmin!

Fix it Please!

I got a message from Garmin this morning saying that Huawei has supposedly admitted to the problem and will be updating their firmware. Lets see.

As for me, I still dream about that 30 minute sync which lasted between my huawei and garmin yesterday!
