Huge garmin connect data usage.

I upgraded my nexus 6p to oreo this week and went out for a ride with the garmin connect app open to browse around for some segments and to do some exploring. My garmni 520 was on and recording the ride, the phone wasn't doing anything fancy. Towards the end of the ride I got some text messages from from my service provider saying I've blown through most of my mobile data for the month. Somehow garmin connect ate through 1.64gb. 1.59gb in background mode.

Can someone explain to me what the heck? That's half of my data plan nuked for the month.

Just noticed EXACTLY the same issue. 850mb of data used in background. Am turning off background usage until this is resolved

I too have a 6P updated to Oreo.

Wow. I've been running a preview version of Oreo (now released version) for quite a few months on my Pixel XL and haven't seen that kind of usage (I'm on project fi, so I would've noticed a few GB). Even with live tracking on I wouldn't expect that.
  • Garmin connect has done that to me this month too - I'm on a Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) and I'm not aware of any software update. Its used 5GB of data this month despite having contacted Garmin support who told me to uninstall and reinstall - it then used another 1GB, so I turned off background data and it used another GB. I've given up and uninstalled it completely as I can't afford that kind of usage.

I'll now be contacting Garmin again and starting talking about whether the Edge 520 is fit for purpose and warranty claims.
