Garmin Connect Android - where are uploaded activities saved?

Hi I can't seem to find an answer anywhere to a seemingly simple question. My Garmin Connect mobile app takes up over 800MB of space. Over 750MB is data, which I assume contains my saved activities. Are those saved anywhere else? The app obviously syncs with Garmin Connect website but do I need to download those manually to be stored on a PC to not lose the data in case my phone stops working? Or if I just need to release some space on my mobile? Ultimately, where is Garmin storing my uploaded data?

  • That's weird for sure. In Android, my Connect App needs 133MB including 12.09MB of data and 1.95MB of cache and I have a ton of activities accumulated over many years.
  • Not sure if the activities are stored locally other than on a temporary basis when the app is running. If you run the app when in aeroplane mode you won't see any data it's all stored online

I've just checked the app in airplane mode and no, the app uses internal storage on permanent basis, not just temporary.

So, if I clear that data will I lose any of my activities? I would expect them all to be stored online, not on my phone only but I obviously don't want to do it without being certain.
  • I'm 99.9% sure that you'd be ok to just delete the data on your phone as the main database is definitely online. However, surprising things happen sometimes so, if you're worried, what I would suggest you do is to simply uninstall GCM and then reinstall it. That will take the data with it and and when you reinstall, it should all come back and hopefully not 800MB. You will have to re-pair to your devices however.

Another option would be to log out of Connect in mobile, create and login to a second "test" Connect account, delete the data on the phone, and then log back into your original account..

I've just reinstalled the app on my mobile. Right now data stored is just 1.5MB. We'll see what happens after I go for a run today! I'll post an update.

    Thanks for your input though!

Update - after several runs my Garmin Connect app shows only 2.54MB of data so it seems the problem is sorted. Thanks everyone for your ideas and help!
  • @Aysandra not sure how you got that to work - if I have mobile connection and wifi turned off the phone shows me no calendar entries or activity history but the activities are all held on the web regardless of whether they are cached locally for the android app

In airplane mode with wi-fi and network off I couldn't see the calendar but the app still took over 800MB of data. That was not a temporary cache, it was permanently using that storage. I've reinstalled the app on my mobile, all activities are - just like you said - safe on the cloud, and now my app is using only 2MB of data even after several longer runs. It was obviously a glitch with the app which stored data permanently while still not giving direct access to it when offline.

It seems the problem is resolved for now and I'll just keep an eye on the storage issue from now on.
