Garmin Connect crashes an obnoxious amount on Android Nougat 7.1.1

I've had this Forerunner 235 for about a week now and my first impression has been terrible. The watch itself is pretty good, but the companion app (Garmin Connect) is hideous. It has crashed several times per day, every day. It even crashes the entire phone and makes it reboot.

Just now, I did a short bike trip to work and when I decided to view my activity in Garmin Connect, the app froze and Android let me know the app isn't responding, so I hit "Close app". Then, I restarted Garmin Connect and it didn't even make it past the first loading screen before freezing up again, and then rebooting the whole phone.

Mind you, everything is working flawless on this Galaxy s5 with LineageOS 7.1.1, except Garmin Connect.

If there is nothing I can do to fix this, I will return the watch.
  • Garmin Connect Mobile never crashes for me on stock OP3 Nougat 7.1.1. Best return the watch.
  • No GCM crashes here on a Google Nexus 5X running 7.1.1...

Perhaps your non-standard ROM is at fault?

My girlfriend's dad has a Fenix 3 HR Sapphire paired to his iPhone 7 and ironically enough, when we compared our stats, his Garmin Connect stopped responding and crashed. This gives me the impression that GCM is the culprit, not the phone. However, obviously when you say you have no problem on your phones, that does contradict my impression. However again, I've read a lot of threads around the web where some people, not all, have severe problems with Garmin Connect.

Seems like a very big hassle to figure out the source. Since everything else works really nicely and smoothly on my phone, I don't think it's worth resetting it for the sake of one app.

Guess I will have to return the watch unless there is a known solution. Just wanted to check in here. Thanks for the replies so far.

Quick update: turns out the fault was the micro SD card in the phone! Noticed file transfers to the phone from my computer stopped, and I tried swapping cards with my tablet and that did the trick. GCM hasn't crashed since the swap.
