Bug in latest update (3.17) of Connect Mobile: 920XT: Hikes are now "Strength Trainin

Seems the latest update of Connect Mobile now interprets hikes on the 920XT as "Strength Training" on Connect Mobile.

Poor testing... why not fix the bug by simply allowing users to re-label activities in Connect Mobile as you can in Garmin Connect?
It's equal work, IMO.
  • After reading your post I just realised it's the same on my 735xt.
    I use the IQapp Hike2 a lot...
At first after the update I thought.. crazy, connect showing Stength Training with me doin time on this?
Now I looked at it again and it's the time I hiked showing as time for strength training. If I open the traing (by clicking on thr circle showing the duration of the training) it is shown correctly as a hike.
    Thanks for pointing this out!
On the GC website it's showing correct as hike.

    How do we fix this?
  • Interesting. I'm the developer of Hike2. I just updated to 3.17 GCM/Android, and a Hike from a couple days back shows up as a Hike (I was running Hike2 on a Fenix 5) on my phone, as well as on the GC website.

Let me try a new hike on on the Fenix 5 and on a va-hr to see if it's only for something new. I'll update this post in a while. Seems it's that it's something odd happened on the garmin end.

update: I'm seeing Hikes as Hikes.

Thanks for checking in on this problem Jim.
I've made 2 screenshots to show how the hikes end up on GC on my Samsung S4 mini (phone):

Translation from Dutch to English painted on in red :)
First screenshot is where the hike shows as strengs training. When clicking the training the second screenshot shows with normal hike activity.
In Garmin Connect online everyting shows up normal.
Hope this helps to figure out what's going on here.
  • I see it now on GCM/A thanks to your screen shots!

"Strength Training" is actually a "sub-sport", and no idea why it's showing that as it's SUB_SPORT_GENERIC by default, and I see the same thing with the native walking app on a Fenix 5. It's something odd on the garmin end.

    Possible solution

The solution I'm trying is to hike with a backpack that has weights in it.. about 40 lbs.
That way it partially qualifies as strength training. :p

How do we proceed from here? Is the tech crew from Garmin reading this thread? Any place we should post bugs or mail them to? Maybe as an app programmer you have connections to report this to?
  • Sometimes Garmin reads stuff here. I don't have any connections with the folks that do GCM. Best thing to do is to contact Garmin Support:

    https://support.garmin.com/en-US/
  • I sent the issue with a link to this thread to Garmin Support.
Hope they'll look into it :)
  • I got a reply from Garmin: (partial quote)

" ... We were unable to replicate this issue on either the Forerunner 920XT or on the Forerunner 735XT.
Please confirm that you have created a Hike profile on the watch and are not using the 3rd party developed Connect IQ app Hike2.
If you are using the Hike2 app please try not using that app and see if you are seeing the same results. ..."

I made the hike profile today but still it comes up as Strength trainiing in Garmin Connect.
I'll write this back to Garmin support and keep you guys posted here.

I was at the Connect IQ Developer's Summit at Garmin's HQ a few days this week, and did show it to some of the Garmin Connect IQ people, but no one from GCM/A was there.
