Garmin Connect Mobile Android blocks one CPU core and drains battery

Since a few days now I noted several times that my android phone was hot and the battery almost empty. I installed OS monitor and have seen that every time this happens Garmin Connect on the phone uses around 14% CPU. As this is a 8 core CPU this meens that one core is used constantly and completely by Garmin Connect Mobile. That explains why the phone is hot and the battery drains quickly. Obviously one thread of Garmin Connect hangs in an endless loop. The app seems to behave normally meanwhile. Closing the application does not help, instead I have to restart the phone. After a restart of the phone everything is normal again for several hours, then Garmin Connect Mobile drains battery again.

This is very ennoying. Has anyone else noted this bug in Garmin Connect Mobile.

I use Galagy S6 phone width Android 6.0.1. and the latest updates.
Garmin Connect mobile has been update by the Google App Store App a few days ago (I don't remember the day)
I have a Garmin 735XT watch connected via bluetooth almost all the time.
  • Several times, in last few weeks and not before, I noticed the same problem. My phone was hot and battery draining fast. Every time GCN was stuck in syncing with my FR35 and only after reseting phone and watch problem was solved. Maybe it is coincidence but every time this happened I was away from wi-fi network.
  • Same problem here - warm phone and no battery left, with the finger pointing to Garmin Connect in the battery stats.
  • Same here

This was the case for me for a long time up until a few months ago. Then it seemed like it was fixed around the beginning of 2017, and it's been back since around the beginning of April. I noticed a huge decline in battery life instantaneously after upgrading to Android 7.1.1 (but I can't tell if GC was also automatically updated at the same time) - 1-1.5hrs SOT* (~8-10hrs total usage) vs 4.5hrs SOT* (~18-26hrs total usage).
    *SOT = Screen on time

So currently I'm refraining from connecting my phone to my watch, making it both a dumb watch and making it difficult to sync activities - otherwise my phone dies before I get to lunch. This is something Garmin must be notified about, by as many people that are experiencing it.
I suggest everyone who is facing this issue submit a bug report to Garmin about this.
I was randomly asked by the GC app to give feedback yesterday and it opened a mail template. I don't know how to trigger this feedback manually, but you can just copy this template and send it to them.
The text is just an example.

    Describe your issue:

Garmin Connect is draining the battery and rendering the smartwatch features of the Forerunner obsolete - using the feature will drain the battery more than twice as fast as it would have without the connection on.
I have tested both turning off the phone's Bluetooth, and turning off just the Forerunner's bluetooth - both result in normal battery life again.
GC is the certainly the culprit of the battery drain. BetterBatteryStats reports a wakelock called bluetooth_timer which prevents the phone from going into deep sleep.

This issue doesn't seem to be particular to my setup - other people are experiencing it, take a look at the forum threads below:

    Device make/model: ?
    Device OS version: ?
    Connect app version: ?

  • Resurrecting this thread as I'm seeing the same issues for the past couple of weeks on my Samsumg galaxy Galaxy S7 with android 8.0.0. Current battery drain is logged at 16% although it has been up to 33%. Anyone else had this issue and fixed it?

I get a warning from Android 8.0.0 every time I launch Garmin Connect Mobile to sync with my Edge 810.
Garmin Connect Mobile version 4.17.1 (but I also had this error with previous versions)

  • I do not trust Garmin's constant rolling of the App. They break more stuff than the value they seem to add by trying to fix things. The last known stable version of the app is 4.15. I simply run it and disable automatic update in the Google Play store settings for that app. I'll wait a good long time until I hear of a stable version again before I accept an update. Simply go back to 4.15 and your problem may be solved.
  • Are you saying that version 4.15 does not cause the wakelock and battery drain?
